Update, 12:07 p.m.: We’re underway and Nanuet leads 7-2 midway through the first quarter.
Update, 12:18 p.m.: Freshman Brianna Celaj scored on a putback at the buzzer to cut Nanuet’s lead to 13-8.
Update, 12:26 p.m.: Nanuet leads 16-13 with 5:41 to play in the half. Brianna Reid hit 3 of 3 from the line early in the quarter. Both teams are already in the bonus.
Update, 12:35 p.m.: Nanuet leads 20-17 after a FT by Katie Weiner but Nanuet will face some adversity here. K.C. Jentzen just went to the bench after picking up her third foul.
Update, 12:40 p.m.: Nanuet just called a timeout up 20-17 still. Amy Delva just hurt her hand and is on the bench. We’ll see if she returns or not. She appeared to be in pain but is smiling now.
Update, 12:44 p.m.: It is just a one-point lead, but Laura Krey’s basket at the buzzer was a symbolic one for Briarcliff. The Bears outplayed Nanuet the entire second quarter and now they enter the half with a 21-20 lead to show for it. Not surprisingly, Nanuet went scoreless with Jentzen on the bench. She will need to return strong for the Golden Knights to win.
Update, 1:41 p.m.: 38.7 seconds left, Nanuet up 46-44, Briarcliff has the ball.
Update, 1:44 p.m.: Amy Delva dived on a loose ball and got a jump-ball call, possession arrow to Nanuet. Golden Knights have the ball, a 46-44 lead with 23.7 left.
Update, 1:45 p.m. Briarcliff steal and a foul. Lane violation on the first free throw. 46-45 Nanuet. Lauren Kahn on the free-throw line, makes one, 47-45, 15.4 left.
Update, 1:46 p.m.: Briarcliff ball with 2.7 seconds left, inbounds under offensive basket, Nanuet up by two.
Update, 1:47 p.m: Last-effort shot falls short. Nanuet wins 47-45.
Update, 1:51 p.m.: The big play in the game was a lane violation with Kasey Heyda at the line with 15.4 left. Apparently, Laura Krey of Briarcliff, who was on Heyda’s left between two Nanuet players, was called for the violation because her toes were over the line. Heyda made the FT, but didn’t have the second, which could’ve tied the game.
Obviously, Briarcliff was very disappointed. I’ll try to get you some reaction from the Briarcliff side.
Also, Jentzen was called for her fourth foul with 1:14 to ply in the third quarter but Nanuet kept the game close enough until she returned.
Update, 2:55 p.m.: Sorry, I just want to correct something. It was actually freshman Brianna Celaj who was at the line late in the game, not Heyda. Krey told my colleague Brian Heyman that she was trying to offer Celaj encouragement before the FT and stepped over the line, causing the violation.
Update, 3:08 p.m.: Here’s Krey on the lane violation: “I was just trying to help her and calm her down and tell her that we’re there for her if she was going to miss the shot, and they called it on us.”

you make one good point, only one‘the ther two refs just stood by never even conferencing the call to insure the proper result. ’ thats it, your other points are stupidity at best. you sound like a little girl crying because her big brother took her dool away. you say you have no routing interest but you also have no clue on how to ref a basketball game. no refs are on the court becuase they make the calls that you don’t have the adventage of seeing. eveeryone things they have the best position to make the call but only the refs do. don’t criticize – take the ref course and see what it takes. for info on that here, i dare you – http://hvbowbb.org/Passing the ref test only means you have good reading comprehension skills. What does that have to do with a refs ability to actually call a game and call it in a way that does not unfairly determine the outcome. I understand it is a very dificult job but in my opinion more has to be done for the quality of the officiating to get better (training etc). Another problem is how these games are assigned. There is the old buddy boy system that exists and that means that the best officials dont always get the games
Some teams like to take out 3 point shooters which with 2 ref’s they get away with as both refs look to the ball not the contact on the shooter. In the CC with 3 refs those fouls will get called – and you put good shooters at the foul line. It makes a big difference and protects the shooter. Keep the 3 refs – I saw few fouls on 3 point shooters as a result of 3 refs.
Josh…are you going to write recaps on the games? What is your thought on the line violation call and your thoughts on the gamee?
college ref Before you make stupid statements you should know that I have coached and reffed in high school and AAU boys and girls. Stop with your nonsense. Stop being protective of three refs who did a lousy job and became the story not the girls or the game.
come on – you not only need to pass a written test but a floor test as well in order to be a ref so give it a shot
THE OLD BUDDY SYSTEM DOES NOT TAKE PLACE IN ORDER TO ASSIGN REFS – refs are rated by the coaches and listed in ranking order
mike – just because you say you have reffed and coach and whatever doesn’t mean your right, the refs did a fine job yesterday -
I watched most of the games at the County Center and the Refs were pretty consistant. During the Irvington vs Kennedy game Kennedy took a shot way after the horn sounded. You could clearly see the lights on the backboard go on and the ball was NOT even in yet. I assume it wasn’t a big deal because Kennedy was so far behind. The lane violation in the Nanuet vs Briarcliff game was just a terrible way to end the game. It happens. It will continue to happen, but it was still a great game.
You have just lost all credability. If you are telling me that many games are not given to refs based on friendships, favors and loyalty then you are full of you know what. I know many guys who tried to break into the ranks only to be shunned by many of your peers so tell that story walking. I hope some of them read this and chime in
Also what abouth the refs that the coaches list that they do not want to ref their games. That usually goes by the wayside as well if the ref is one of the boys
I just read all this junk about the refs. I must say the refs were a little whistle happy in that game, but you cant blame the whole game on that one call. The game should have never come down to that. Nanuet and Briarcliff missed a lot of easy shots that should have been made.
Good season Briarcliff and good luck to Nanuet in the finals.
come on – not true – section 1 boces handles all assignments – they have a list of the refs ratings 1 thru whatever and only boces does assignments based on the coaches ratings
You guys really need to end this. The call was made, the refs were whistle happy during the game. Both teams played hard and both teams had chances to end the game earlier then the last few seconds.
Great season Briarcliff and good luck to Nanuet Tomorrow
Did not see the call but I will agree that the officials have taken the game away from the kids all year long. I did see the Peekskill game and they surely guaranteed Peekskill the win by fouling out three of Pearl Rivers best players. Those refs were two of the best women refs around but the add on man was attrocious. In the Ossining/Ursline game two of the refs were excellent but the third could not even get up and down the court. If you have the three ref system there are going to be MORE fouls so they need a sixth foul. PLEASE STOP WITH THESE NONSENSE BLOCKING FOULS!!!!!!!!! the kids can’t play defense because of that!!!!!!
Three officials will obviously call a game tighter, and everyone keeps talking about the players having to adjust. What about the officals adjusting? They have been working with a two-man crew all year, then comes the CC, a third is dropped in. Not only must the officials adjust to working with an unfamiliar partner having Westchester and Rockland refs at the whistle, they also have to deal with a third member. Keep in mind, the high school refs have been working with two all season, that is why the argument that on the collegiate and pro level, a three man crew is used isn’t a valid point-they use three man crews all year. Good officials will conference on the court to make sure the call is correct-high school officials seem hesitant to “show up” a fellow ref, so they just stand there.
It is such a shame that after a long season of hard work, a ref decides to make a call like the one that ended the Briarcliff game. I am not the least bit suprised it was a Rockland ref, we have been dealing with these guys all year.
@why 3? dude its been said before
the 3 man system is designed to have the game played in its most proper form. the girls need to not foul so far away from the basket and if they do it’s their fault. as long as the refs are consistenent in their calls, which they were, they are doing their job correctly. stop whinning!!!!!!!!!!!!
The justification for 3 refs seems obvious. (Note: 3 competent refs is assumed, since adding an inferior ref to 2 quality refs actually brings down the 2-ref level.) 3 refs have more natural court coverage, which means less likelihood of a blown call at a crucial time—which everyone understands is worthwhile. But more court coverage, coupled with higher intesity of playoffs, does mean more foul trouble for players unless an adjustment is made. BUT THATS A COACHING ISSUE. A good coach would recognize the switch to 3 refs at county center and spend 30 minutes at practice simulating how to avoid attracting the marginal foul calls.
The defense of a three man officiating crew in response to my comments is a puzzle.
I made some points about what a flawed system it is to go from 2 refs to 3 when all season they have been working in a two man system.
I could not diagree more with a “good coach spending 30 minutes at practice…”
You really think coaches practice to adjust to officiating?
That is really out there.
The issue isn’t if we should use 2 or 3 refs.
The issue is the quality of the refs.
The girls in Section 1 deserve better. The boys do not have the same issues.
HS Basketball
You are 100% right..the lack of good officials starts in girls CYO and continues right through varsity.
It is most definitely a two-tiered system, with the better refs going to the boy’s side.
As I recall we went through this same topic last year and nothing has changed this year. There will always be 3 refs at the CC. End of story.
HS Basketball – I agree with you 100%, Section 1 girls refs are the bottom of the barrell(CYO refs) and now there are 3 of them on the floor. I feel sorry for the girls playing, they can never get the momentum going without one of them blowing.
Try
Another game and more controversy. I can not believe what I just witnessed tonight at the County Center. What a disaster. Pleasantville and Woodlands played one helluva game. Kudos to both teams for a FANTASTIC GAME. I know it was a boys game and this is the girls blog, but I can not believe that a REF calls a FOUL with 1 second left in the game. YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING MEEEEEE! First the Briarcliff girls team and now the Pleasantville boys team. How do you take these games away from these kids that have busted their rear ends all year long. I just don’t know what more to say.
Snowed In
Do you recall the reason why PVille was in the finals. Because of a bad call at the end of the game against Nanuet with 5.8 seconds left and Nanuet up 1. At the worst that should have been a jump ball and Nanuets ball
For College Ref
Once again the refs put themselves front and center but Im sure you will have an excuse for this as well. You can watch 50 games in NYC and you will never hear a peep about the refs. You know why because they let the kids play and dont make themsevles bigger than the game. Too bad for the kids from Pleasantville. And you still havent said where you played chsaa bb
“You really think coaches practice to adjust to officiating?”
Coaches should practice anything that will help them win. Period. You have the luxury to whine and stomp your feet about the way you want things to be, but a coach needs to be ready for the reality of things. And that reality – for reasons explained to but ignored by you – is that regular season has 2 refs, but county center has 3.
set shot
And thats what we are all saying. It is wrong and unnecessary. Wake up!!
Just A Fan I am sorry I didn’t get a chance to see the Nanuet boys vs Pleasantville game. All I am saying is that it was a terrible way to lose a game. It was a tough game and its a shame someone had to lose!
Come on,
To simplify my point one final time: I want the best officiated game possible at the county center. It is really that simple. If that means 3 refs, then 3 refs it is. If it is called tighter than what the teams were used to in the regular season, then so be it and the teams need to adjust. I cant fathom the argument that “we can have a better officiated game in a final, but we shouldnt because no one is used to that.” That seems backwards logic.
To simplify my point one final time: teams should not have to adjust for the last one or two games of the year when they have played with two refs for four to five months. The ones that need to adjust are the refs who also work with two all year and then are faced with a whole new set of circumstances. The whole idea is totally unecessary and does nothing but cause problems. But then again its Section 1. Come on set shot you put it out there that you played in nyc. Maybe not
I’ll be happy for you if you have 2 good refs if your team plays at CC, and I’ll be happy if ours is playing and has 3 good refs.
My vote is – 2 REFS ONLY AT CC. Teams play that way all year round, leave it alone. Too many BLOWS and not enough playing time. This is basketball a contact sport, they BLOW on every little bump. Call the fouls when it is warranted.
I totally agree with TWO CENTS. Two refs. Maybe we can get some guys in there who arent 50-60 years old to ref too.
It is nice to see hard-working always hustling Heyda get All-Tournament team MVP. She and Weiner, on a team of 3 point shooters, often get overlooked, but without their efforts the ball doesn’t get rebounded or the proper outlet pass made so that another teammate can score. Then they go back to work inside and do it all over again and again.
Just FYI – Brairclif (and Weiner) has been at the County Center for the past 4 years along with Irvington – GO BEARS!
sorry – Heyda was only All-Tournament (not MVP)
u cant blamebit on the refs the b’cliff girls sucked they were no good on the boards or shooting / defence and that last call of the game…. U CANT BLAME THE REFS FOR ANYTHING
@bearproud
SO HAVE THE NANUET GIRLS
nanuet fan,
Sorry, but Nanuet was only at the County Center in 2009 and 2010.
Nanuet fan,
how can you say briarcliff sucked? Were you at the game..
FootballFan… Don’t worry about that. Some people just show no respect or objectivity.
@ Bearproud all the Briarcliff girls were out there HUSTLING not just HEYDA AND WEINER. There were many contributors to their great season. How dare you mention just two girls. You should be ashamed of yourself. EVERY girl on that team HUSTELED their ASSES off all season long and especially during the playoffs. The best thing about this Briarcliff girls team is that they will have 4-5 starters returning next year. Hamlin should have another great season in 2010-2011!
huh
