Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Uncategorized on Mar 03, 2010

Update, 4:14 p.m.: Lakeland leads 14-10 after one quarter. Vicki Kowalski has six points on two 3-pointers. Jazmin Garcia has two 3’s of her own for Peekskill.

Peekskill has pressed Lakeland all game, forcing six turnovers, but the Red Devils have committed six turnovers of their own.

Update, 4:21 p.m.: Lakeland leads 23-10 with 5:26 to play in the half. Kowalski has been terrific. She now has four 3’s and has been almost automatic.

Update, 5:24 p.m.: Bridget McGovern just scored off a feed from Jarosz. Garcia missed a 3 on the other end. Timeout Lakeland, leading 55-44 with 1:23 left in the game.

Update, 4:26 p.m.: Tori Jarosz was just whistled for her third foul. She’ll be out the rest of the half. But Lakeland still leads 26-16 with 3:36 to play in the half. Lakeland must hold it.

Update, 4:36 p.m.: Lakeland saw its lead cut to five, but Kowalski continues to keep the Hornets on top. They leads 31-23 at halftime. She now has a whopping 18 points in the first half on the strength of five 3-pointers. Jarosz finished the half with seven points and six boards.

For Peekskill, the leader is Garcia, who has 11. Only three Red Devils have scored: Garcia, Asia Jackson and Tasia Nolan.

It was very important for Lakeland to maintain it’s lead so that mission was accomplished.

Update, 5 p.m.: Lakeland leads 43-29 with under 3 minutes to play in the third quarter.

Update, 5:13 p.m.: Lakeland still leads 45-35 with 5:52 left, but Jarosz, who has shuttled in and out of the game, just picked up her fourth, and Kristin Pappalardo just picked up hers as well. Lakeland will need to keep those two on the floor to win, and right now Jarosz is on the bench.

Update, 5:17 p.m.: Garcia just picked up her fourth for Peekskill on a basket by Christiana Gjelaj. She missed the FT, but Lakeland still leads 49-37 with 4:51 to play.

Update, 5:22 p.m.: A basket by Peekskill has cut Lakeland’s lead to 53-44 with 2:04 to play. Steve Fallo just called timeout to re-insert Jarosz, who will try to help Lakeland finish off the championship. Pappalardo has played well in the fourth quarter despite the foul trouble.

Update, 5:27 p.m.: Excellent game for Lakeland’s role players. Pappalardo has 17, Kowalski has 18.

Update, 5:30 p.m.: Lakeland wins 61-47. Excellent performance for the Hornets, who will meet the Section 9 champ on Tuesday at 7:30 at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie in the Class A regional semifinals.

Update, 5:44 p.m.:

Kristin Pappalardo, Lakeland
All-tournament: Tori Jarosz, Lakeland

Politics are undeniably involved in the assignment of both boys and girls officials for the games at the CC. BOCES handles the preliminary assignments but changes are often made afterwards. I know of officials that were removed by coaches after the BOCES assignments were set due to politics.( ie. the coach didn’t like the officiating style of a particular official vis a vis the opponent he now faced) Also the girls board president and vice president being assigned to sectional finals, regional semi finals and regional finals a year or two ago seems to smack of politics if you ask me. That being stated, I think Section One boys and girls officials, at least those on the top end, are very good at what they do. I’m certain that the overwhelming bloggers who criticize officials are ignorant of many rules and have no understanding of the Tower Principle: Advantage vs. Disadvantage. Leave the officials alone. They are regular people just like you and me. All excellent officials want to officiate their best possible game every time they go out on the floor. You need a lot of guts to put yourself in a similar position. Why not walk a mile in their shoes before you become so critical? For those of you that are old enough I’ll quote Bob Dylan: ” Don’t criticize what you can’t understand.”

I was wondering how Tori Jarosz did not get MVP? I was at almost all the games at County Center, and saw both of Lakeland’s. Just because she got less than 20 points in one of the games means she shouldn’t get it? Best player on the floor was her, no doubt. Disgrace to whoever chose those awards.

  8. sect 9

your right she is CLEARLY the best player on the team. She makes the other players better.

I too was at the game that nite. everyone is entitled to an opinion. Being a coach myself, the section 1 committee hit the nail on the head this time. They picked the best all around player this tournament for MVP. Tori did well also, but she could never break a press like the role players around her do. And it takes those role players to get the ball to the big girl…...and those role players get that done. Great job Lakeland! Keep it going!!! Gotta love the one sided comments by people…....its a TEAM.And lets not forget they’re kids.
