For the first time, the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) named its Best of BCANY — Top 50 Players for the 2009-10 season. The honorees include players from all sections, as well as from the city Catholic, public and private schools whose coaches are BCANY members. The players are picked at the local level, and the Top 50 are then chosen by the BCANY Board of Directors.
Six players from Section 1 were honored, led by stars from the last two Class B state and Federation champions. They are:
Class AA —
Saniya Chong, Ossining
Class A —
Christa Scognamiglio, Pearl River
Class B —
Tara Gabelman, Irvington
Riley Harrington, Irvington
K.C. Jentzen, Nanuet
Lauren Kahn, Nanuet
• Four players from the Lower Hudson Valley were honored as New Balance Academic All-State: Kim Broccoli from Carmel, Alexandra Osborn-Jones from Rye Country Day, Molly Schauber from Holy Child and Alex Venuto from Ossining. Holy Child was also one of five teams from around the state who were honored for their work in the classroom.

was tori jaroz not even mentioned? am I reading this wrong or shouldnt she be included in this??
But, congrats to those girls that were selected, a great honor, glad we had a lot of representation!
It’s a handful of high school coaches from upstate, maybe they never heard of Tori or a lot of great players from around these parts.
Saw Chong play last nite for the first time-she is talented and will go far..Very sound player who has good court vision and can shoot the lights out of the ball
Balling… As I wrote in the intro, the players eligible are only those whose coaches are part of the BCANY. It does not include every player or every team. Perhaps that is the reason Jarosz was not included.
Where are Gabelman and Jentzen going to college?
Jentzen is going to Dominican. I will report where Gabelman is headed to college when I can confirm it.
If you are not part of the BCANY then your players can’t get awards.
It’s a gimmick, NSCAA does it also.
Great way to lure the schools into purchasing membership.
Hudson Valley Sports Report is reporting today that Sarah Mesuch the coach of Lourdes is not being retained. It is an interesting move coming off a year where she was voted league coach of the year. The Athletic director Dave Seipp is also being let go. An interesting development and obviously a great job on the market
ballboy,
I just read the same thing on hudson valley sports report. I was suprised to see Sarah let go. Obviously the program is not at the level it was at with Giorgis, but there was obviously going to be a dropoff when he left. I wonder who the candidates for the job will be. I remember reading an article in HVSR that Beacon has two coaches who played for Giorgis, I know the head coach is Christina Dahl, and the assistant was philabar (sp?). I wonder if either of them will get a phone call? They have had success the past few years. Also I think the Dover coach is a lourdes alum and played for giorgis too. I wonder if there are any other old lourdes grads out there for the job? Anybody have any ideas on who they might go after? They seem to be making more of a commitment to the sports program after bringing in walsh to coach the football team, hopefully they hit a home run with a hire for girls basketball. All the alumni have always loved following their success and I hope it continues
Who is on the Empire State roster?
Empire roster won’t be finalized till after last tryout next week
crazy>hornet>thats a no brainer> the team was pick months ago>trust me
Al Viani WOULD BE A GREAT CHOICE OR ONE OF HIS DAUGHTERS FOR THE JOB- JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!
Al Viani at OLL is a joke. He would never coach a team that didn’t have 15 all-stars like his AAU teams.
ESG…roster was picked tonite and thought it was quite fair! While the majority of the girls that made the team were Lady Knicks AAU players it makes sense when 22 of 28 trying out are from the Lady Knicks..I think that of the 14 picked 4 were non lady knick players(Chong,Knox,Wood and a girl from New Ro)..thought the tryouts were intense(like Riccis coaching style!),fair and very uptempo… believe there was 2 freshman,2 sophmores and the rest juniors…my personal observations T.Whitaker best player on the court-great intensity, hustle, drive, and basketball skills…followed closely in no particular order by Chong(tremendous talent who could deveolp into section ones best ever),DeCruz who is the ultimate team player and is super tough and a true point guard, and B Horne who is a solid post player but impressed me with hustle long range shooting and passing…those 4 will be the core of a solid HV ESG team with (didn’t hear all names picked) Milner,Knox,Abrams,Kanner,Spicer,Wood,Lai,KNox + others)..good set of tryouts by Coach Ricci,Coach Reilly & Coach Fioretti
Viani would be a joke at OLL. He has never coached a team that didn’t have 12 all stars.
“If you are not part of the BCANY then your players can’t get awards.”
That’s why it’s a joke, a hack job.
Every organization like BCANY gives awards to it’s members at one time or another and the parameters were stated in the article. No one was claiming otherwise. Section 1 awards All-Section only to players who belong to the Section. According to your rule that would also be a hack job.Interesting.
“common” you’re reasoning is all wet since all HS basketball players are enrolled in … high school. All high schools in the state are in one of the various sections. Each section awards its own, accordingly.
BCANY has member schools intermingled in the same section. Thus, athletes appear to be awarded ahead of others in their section when that simply is not the case, since schools in the same section may or may not be BCANY members. All athletes in Section 1 compete with one another for All Section and other awards (e.g., All Academic).
The first mention of the BCANY award did not mention the facts regarding membership of schools. That was only brought out after poster(s) here mentioned apparent lapses in the outcome.
