The White Plains girls basketball program has historically hosted the Dr. Lynne Kahn Holiday Classic, named in honor of the school’s former athletic director. The tournament will have a new twist at the suggestion of Sue Adams (who, by the way, is coming back as coach).
While she was at the County Center this winter, Adams thought about the lack of female coaches in Section 1 girls basketball. She decided to turn the holiday tournament into a one-day showcase of some of the area’s top female coaches, a showcase dubbed “Queens of the Court.”
The schedule will include the following games:
— Pearl River vs. Ursuline
— Mount Vernon vs. Irvington
— White Plains vs. Rye
The coaches participating have state championships, sectional championships and coach of the year honors aplenty. Adams thought an event including them would highlight the success of these local coaches, and it will.
The slate will feature a bevy of interesting games. Pearl River and Ursuline have young teams that should be even better next season. Mount Vernon and Irvington are defending section champs, and will be one of the most anticipated games of the year. And White Plains and Rye have become annual December (friendly) adversaries, playing one another in the Kahn Classic and Rye Rotary Classic every year.
As I’ve said in the past, I’m a big fan of showcase events. Anything that gathers several quality teams together on the same night at the same gym is great for girls hoops. Period.

Now thats an awesome lineup. I’ll want to see those games. Top teams playing one another.
This is a great idea! But fyi Josh, Ursuline is not a young team. It returns five seniors, three juniors, and one freshman…
*sophomore…
I heard Mary Henwood from Rye has retired. If so one of Westchester’s finest coaches (girls or boys) had a great run.
I guess Rye has to hire a female now. What does Sue Adams know that the rest of us don’t?
Rumor has it a former NY D1 coach coming to Rye
PREVIEW FOR 2010-2011?
Summer Info?
I heard there is also a “Basement Bombers” Tournament to be played at the County Center.
Keio vs Clarkstown South
Rye Neck vs Mahopac
Ramapo vs Roosevelt
Schecter vs Yonkers
This is it,
I hope what you heard is not true. If you are saying it to be funny, you are instead being terribly rude to young girls.
“I heard there is also a “Basement Bombers” Tournament to be played at the County Center.”
I smell an overweight white male that couldn’t run up and down the court even once before keeling over and entering the ER on a gurney. Are there meds to help people grow up?
Why is he white?
Just out of curiousity, is there going to be a “Kings of the Court” tournament the following Saturday to showcase “some of the area’s top male coaches”?
Amen!
Who was given the coaching job at Lourdes? What about Rye? What about Somers?
Thanks.
What about Haldane?
What about the John Jay position/
What about Valhalla??
Valhalla coach gone????
whyy
The Lourdes job to my knowledge has not been filled yet. Their summer league team is being coached by Ben Lombardo who coaches the Hudson Valley Knights 16u team. I do not believe that he has any interest in coaching the team long term, and is just helping out so that they can play. I do not know much about the Haldane job except that Sarah Mesuch interviewed for the job but apparently did not get it.
Being a lourdes alum I am a bit upset that not to much effort seems to be being put into the successor. In a previous post there were quite a few positive names bantied about, but there does not appear to have been much movement in the right direction. I would have hoped they would have had a coach in place by summer league so that the girls could have started working in the new coach’s system
There seems to be quite a few coaching positions open. Which John Jay are you talking about? JJEF or JJCR?
Section1 – JJCR
Oh wow I didn’t know Chuck S. wasn’t coming back. I wasn’t sure if it was there or at JJEF. I know at JJEF they have a relatively new coach in Coach Brooks.
