The CHSAA teams, Our Lady of Victory and Maria Regina, begin their postseason tomorrow. They are two of eight teams in the New York Archdiocese tournament.
Even if they lose, their seasons are not over. The Archdiocese tournament merely seeds teams in the New York State ‘A’ division tournament, which begins March 9.
Victory (14-8) plays St. John Villa (12-12) of Staten Island at Cardinal Spellman at 3 p.m. Victory beat SJV in a close game last year during the regular season. They have not played this year.
Victory is led by point guard Alyssa Pechin’s 12.6 ppg and 5.1 assists per game. Tra’leassa King averages 9.4 ppg and 8 rebounds per game. To win, Pechin needs to push the ball and create easy baskets. The Jaguars must stop SJV forward Nicole Francomano.
Maria Regina plays Moore Catholic, another Staten Island team, at St. John Villa at 1 p.m. Maria will be a big underdog. Moore is an ‘AA’ division school that’s only playing in this tournament because there are only two AA teams in the NY Archdiocese, so the CHSAA mixes them in with the A’s.
Both teams will play the second round on March 4.
