Our Lady of Victory got off to a terrible start in today’s archdiocesan tournament first round game. It fell behind St. John Villa 19-3 before losing 67-41. The lead got down to nine in the third quarter but SJV cranked the intensity back up.
Alyssa Pechin and Sara Dowd led the Jaguars with nine points each.
The good news is, this is only a seeding tournament for the CHSAA states, so Victory lives to fight another day. It will play Preston next Friday at Spellman in the second seeding round.
Over in Connecticut, Harvey fell to Watkinson 60-25 in the championship of the Hudson Valley Athletic League. Watkinson super sophomore Dache Williams scored her 1,000th point in the win, netting 28 in all.
A season-ending shoulder injury to Harvey forward Nicole Johnson cost the Cavaliers dearly. Without the 6-foot-2 junior, they were forced to double and triple-team Williams.
“Early on, our girls were able to rotate inside to the open Watkinson guards,” coach Chris Kelly said, “but as the game moved along our girls got tired and it turned into shooting practice for Watkinson on the perimeter, as our girls didn’t have the energy to get out and defend the perimeter,” the coach said.
Sophomore Abby Hassett led them with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Chinasa Nwokocha chipped in with seven points.
