The championship game of the Slam Dunk Tournament is about to get underway between Irvington and Mount Vernon.
Irvington’s starting lineup:
Marley Giddins
Ryan McMahon
Alyssa DiCampli
Alexis Martins
Brittni Lai
Mount Vernon’s starting lineup:
Kelli Vester
Sade King
Chyna Johnson
Diashia Richards
Lubirdia Gordon
Update 1: Right off the opening tip-off, Lai wastes no time and with a burst of speed scores the game’s first basket.
Update 2: King enters game with a sore ankle, but shows no sign of pain early-on by performing a spin move to the basket.
Update 3: Irvington pulls ahead 10-6 after a pair of 3-pointers from Lai.
Update 4: The game has a nice quickened pace with both teams matching speed for speed. Irvington has a 19-13 lead with under two minutes to go in the first quarter.
Update 5: Gordon called for her second foul of the game, sending Giddins to the line, who gives the Bulldogs a 21-13 lead.
Update 6: Irvington calls a 30-second timeout with 20.7 seconds left in the first quarter.
Update 7: Mount Vernon extends the stoppage in play calling a full timeout, trailing 21-13.
Update 8: Lai sinks a wide-open 3-pointer at the buzzer for her 15th point of the game to give the Bulldogs a 24-13 lead going into the second quarter.
Update 9: Martins the beneficiary of a nice give-and-go…gets an easy bucket. With Gordon sitting out for Mount Vernon, the Bulldogs were dominating on the glass and getting those all-important second chance opportunities.
Update 10: Bulldogs slowly pulling away with this one, lead the Knights 29-16 early in the second quarter.
Update 11: I know it’s been said before, but Irvington is just like a well-oiled machine. The Bulldogs are working the transition offense very effectively and Mount Vernon, which started out matching Irvington, can’t seem to keep up now.
Update 12: After a King 3-pointer, Lai goes coast-to-coast and answers back with an easy layup…gives Irvington a 35-17 lead.
Update 13: Mount Vernon goes on a 7-0 run to pull within 11…with 2:43 remaining in the first half, as Irvington calls a 30-second timeout.
Update 14: Under a minute to go in the first half, Bulldogs lead 40-28
Update 15: Some quick, crips passes for Irvington leads to Martins on the line, sinks 1 of 2…Mount Vernon slows down play with time running down.
Update 16: Martins picks up her third foul and sends Richards to the line for two shots with 13.6 remaining in the first half.
Update: Giddins on a second chance opportunity, ends the first half with a buzzer beater to give Irvington a 43-28 lead going into the third quarter.
Stats at the half: Brittni Lai leads the Bulldogs with 21 points in 14 minutes of action and Alexis Martins has 11 points with five rebounds. Marley Giddins has seven points with five rebounds.
For Mount Vernon, Sade King is the leading scorer playing on a hurt ankle with 13 points, but she is just 2-of-7 from downtown. Lubirdia Gordon has nine points with seven rebounds.
Update 17: The second half begins the way the first quarter started with a Lai fast break score.
Update 18: Martins easy transition bucket from a pass by Lai…Mount Vernon failed to get back.
Update 19: King gets her 15th point on a nice move to the basket, but Martins answers back with a 3-pointer to put Irvington up 50-33.
Update 20: Mount Vernon calls a full timeout with 3:50 left in the third quarter, trailing 52-33.
Update 21: Gordon displays her force in the paint snatching a rebound and going right back up for the basket and on the following series, grabs another board.
Update 22: Just under two minutes left in the third quarter…54-35
Update 23: Lai makes it look all too easy with another fast break layup.
Update 24: After a Giddins basket off a Lai assist, Mount Vernon calls a timeout trailing 58-35 with 1:03 remaining in the third quarter.
Update 25: The third quarter comes to a close with Irvington holding strong with a 58-37 lead.
Update 26: Nice passing by Irvington, hits open DiCampli for basket who then converts for the 3-point play.
Update 27: Lai nice dish to Martins for her 21st point…after a Gordon basket, Martins goes right back on the fast break. Again, Mount Vernon is not hustling back and the Bulldogs have killed the Knights off the break. Mount Vernon calls a timeout with 5:17 left in the game and trailing 69-41.
Update 28: Irvington continues to out-hustle Mount Vernon, increases lead to 71-48 with 3:50 left.
Update 29: Giddins gets pushed on her way to the basket, but still makes the shot to increase the Bulldogs lead 75-48 with 3:06 left in the game.
Update 30: Down to the last minute of play…77-50.
Update 31: Irvington wins its second-straight title at the Slam Dunk Tournament and finishes off Mount Vernon 77-52.
Brittni Lai announced as the MVP of the tournament. She finished with 25 points and eight assists in the title game.

MV all one on one
MV does not hustle to the ball. Big girl does not seem to know how to get position and has her hands @her side on offense.
Not a good match up MV does not get back on D. Should have been Irv vs PR. My guess is Irv would take them by single digits, but no surprise if PR beat them. Top 4 teams in the section seem to be 1. oss 2. irv 3. PR or TZ
RC-WC, I’m with you. Haywood, sometimes you gotta go against your heart although I do applaud your supporting your team. When does Oss play Irv?
RC- WC – Doesn’t Oss. play PR this season? If they do, it could get interesting.
Also, does anyone know if there is a link or web site that gives all the team
records and standings,etc ???
Sect – yes they do I think Oss may win that, but who knows.
Here is the link to standings

They play in an Autism tourney… at Irvington on or about jan 15.
Nice job on the updates from multi-days at CC, guys.
Thanks everyone for the info and updates. Happy New Year to all!!!
Ossining plays PR in Feb. They would see Irvington in the Autism Classic. PR didn’t clean house as was expected against the teams in the Slam Dunk if they are supposed to be that good….I felt they looked good in spurts. Nothing good inside at all- if they face a team with an inside presence it could be a problem.
Want2havfun,
You have to also realize that I am using my real name ,I live in mount vernon. I know a lot of people and a lot of people know me,lol mount Vernon to the end
Section 1 Basketball- I totally agree with your PR opinion. However, I did see PR play MT. Vernon and both games at the Slam Dunk, and I saw them 4-5 times last season. It seems that in the Mt. Vernon game, and Brewster, the PR coach pulls her starters a little quicker than most teams when she has a big lead in the 2nd half. More times than not, the subs end up playing against the other teams’ starters so the 30 pt lead which would easily end up 35-40, often ends up 15 -20. If she left them in like the Irvington coach did yesterday, and let most of the starters play deep into the 4th qt, one might see some horrific scores. I do agree that PR could use a little more height. But often in HS and college-Speed beats height. WE will see…..
Haywood, let’s have a top ten weekly picks here.
Maybe you will fair better with girls b ball lol.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, CWE.
If Mount Vernon had Irvington’s hustle they would be dangerous. Irvington has a work ethic that many teams need to take note of. Irvington is not perfect but they, like Ossining, have a very disciplined and hardworking team, which innately makes them better them most teams. MV did not win but they did however, look promising, as always. Excited to see how the teams progress throughout the season.
CHEIFWILDEAGLE,
HAPPY NEW YEAR,I REALLY HOPE OSSINING WINS A STATE TITLE,CHONG IS AMAZING,IF THEY GET BY MY TEAM ,LLOOLL
PR could have killed Brew by 70 please. That was mercy on a bad team. If they meet again you’ll see 99-29 PR. Bad matchup paying money to pay to see that game shame.
Mt.vernon lacks talent Sade can’t do it all they do not have a bench
Who dat?
Haywood, well said, O’Town has to win a section title first.
Hope to see you at the County Center.
@Kickin
Respectfully, I think you are incorrect but not 100% false. MV has talent, I think what they lack is EXECUTION. The have a nice starting five and some young players coming off the bench, but so far they haven’t found 5 players that gel.
They may not all be King and Gordon but they are promising. MV also has been playing at least 9 of their many players in majority of their games.
What Irvington has is Lai. Without Lai that team would be lost! She handles the ball very well and was killing Mt.Vernon with her shots in the first half. It looked like she wasn’t concerned with scoring much in the second half because I do believe she could have had 50 points easy!!!! Irvington isn’t even mentioned with the rest of the upper echelon teams if not for Lai!
@Santa
I agree, Lai is a great player and one of the contributing factors to the win. But Irvington’s team still would have won because no Lai would not have made Mount Vernon get back on defense or make open shots/lay-ups.
Dear Santa. Irv would have won that game without Lai. MV had NO defense. Irv has 5 exceptional starters and a very very deep bench.Im not sure where your from (but I could guess) and dont worry, Lai will do fine without your help. hohoho, A FAN
@HappyNewYear we said the exact same thing. I just said it less arrogantly. Even though Santa might need some help, I am pretty sure that the majority of the people who have seen the game would RESPECTFULLY agree with the both of us.
