When Saniya Chong walked to the foul line with four minutes left in the fourth quarter of a road game against Holmdel (NJ), she had no idea that she was just two points away from the all-time scoring record at Ossining High School.
Chong entered Sunday’s game just 30 points shy from becoming the Pride’s new all-time scoring leader, a record which had been set by Brittney Thomas (from the Class of 2000). Thomas had finished her five years on the varsity team with 1,770 points.
After Chong sank the first free throw, her teammates screamed, “One more point,” and upon hitting her second shot from the foul line, Ossining came out to celebrate during a called time out.
In Ossining’s 85-69 win, Chong recorded her second-straight triple-double, finishing with 35 points, 11 assists, and 10 steals.
“I didn’t even think I was close (to the record), but when I found out I was really excited,” Chong said.
Destini Walker also put in a strong showing, joining Chong for a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 steals.
Jalay Knowles rounded out Ossining’s big-three after scoring 20 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
