Friday afternoon, the Pearl River High School girls basketball will step onto the court at Hudson Valley Community College in its first ever state final four game. It’s opponent will be Section 2’s Averill Park. Since Rob and I didn’t know much about the Section 2 champs, we decided to contact James Allen , who covers the Warriors the the Times Union, to get a scouting report. Here’s what he gave us.
The Warriors are making their third straight Final Four appearance. They won the state and Federation titles in 2010 (only three players on this season’s played on that team, and
none of them were starters).
Averill Park returned to the state final in 2011 despite finishing 7-11 during the regular season. The Suburban Council is filled with mostly AA teams (including 2012 state-ranked teams Shenendehowa, Colonie and Shaker).
The entire 2011 squad returned this season, led by starters Brooke O’Shea (five-year varsity player, sixth man in 2010), Bridget Carney, Alison Nunziato, Julia Mai and Elaina Ryan.
The teams losses all came in close decisions against state-ranked AA foes – three to AA champion Colonie and one each to Shenendehowa and Shaker. Coach Sean Organ has guided his team to five Section II titles since 2006—the only sectional titles in school history.
