I was informed that Ossining’s Saniya Chong has been invited to compete for a roster spot on the USA Basketball U-18 National Team.
Chong will participate in a three-day trial period from May 18-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where only 12 girls will be selected.
The trials were by invite only, so you know from that little fact alone, she will be in competition alongside some of the best young players in the country.
The U-18 National Team will compete in the 2012 FIBA U-18 championships from Aug. 15-19 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Under 18 ??? What if a player is 18 ? Can she still try out
Do your best, have fun and let the chips fall where they may!!!!!
under is 18 your IQ?
I also thought U-18 meant – Under 18. If that’s the case then 18 would be to old especially for a rising senior. No reason for insults.
I wonder if Coach Ricci will be attending the tryouts…Maybe he will try to get on Team USA’s coaching staff.
Wow…great for her but I cannot wait to see the results of this one… Competing against the top tier prospects in the country and only getting 5-10 shot attempts gonna be interesting…
Tally up … will she get more EXPOSURE or be EXPOSED ?
HOOPS, I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried, can’t see anyone putting that belly on there sideline…#slimfast
Why can’t we just be happy for her?
“Why not”? Petty jealousy is why not.
As for Coach Ricci, you gotta give the guy credit for not only promoting his girls but supporting and guiding them throughout the process as well. The guy goes way beyond what is expected of a typical high school coach. Pettiness aside. I’d like to see many more people like this. It would make our world and certainly Section 1, a better place for all.
@hsbbbfan: DITTO ”
Chief, I also agree but please don’t make it seem like he’s the ONLY coach who does things like this. I am not taking anything away from his accomplishments and his passion to help guide his players. Just sayin’ that there are others.
There he goes. Always trying to diminish coach Ricci in anyway he can.
Hey Stanner, how about citing some speific exampes of what some other coaches do in the area that is beyond their normal responsibilities. I agree, there are others. Do you have any specific examples that you are referring to or are you once again just trying to downplay what Ricci does?
Hs, Please learn how to read. I didn’t say a negative word about your husband.
I believe you cearly said that there were others who do all or more of what coach Ricci does which is to obviously mean that “he’s not so special”. I simply asked you for a few examples. Or are you just speaking from the wrong end of your anatomy again? Just askin.
Instead of just arguing or throwing out wise cracks, how about some facts from you for once?
Hs, I’ll be serious in my reply. No matter what I write you go to great lengths to interpret anything I say as anti Ricci. This time I wrote that “I am not taking anything away from his accomplishments” which I think are, for the most part, outstanding yet you make constantly make the case that he is the only saint in heaven. I can start with many examples of coaches who have gone the extra mile on behalf of their players from long time Stanner coach Jack Curran, OLL legend Brian Giorgus,(sp) Ursuline’s Beth Wooters, Briarcliff’s Don Hamlin, Haldane’s Ken Thomas and so many more. Why do I have to give you any specific examples of what any of these coaches did behind the scenes to help their players other than to say that Ricci is not the ONLY ONE who has ever done so? Do you know everything about what goes on behind the curtain in every other high school locker room? Who are you anyway? Nobody on this blog is more defensive and self conscious than you especially with your relentless adoration of Dan Ricci. I appreciate your admiration for him but I beg you to be at least a little bit more neutral in your perspective. Please read carefully: I THINK RICCI IS AN OUTSTANDING COACH WHO GOES THE EXTRA MILE ON BEHALF OF HIS PLAYERS just like MANY OTHER coaches have done as well. What do you think is wrong or the slightest bit offensive about that? (your serve)
Just suffice it to say that I have long and close ties to the Oss community. I know other coaches do great things for kids. The initial post was referring to Ricci and you had to chime in, as you usually do, with your negativity. As for who I am. Don’t forget, I offered to meet you three times. You went dark every time. Better question is who are you? And why are you so obsessed with Oss? I was born there, worked there and have a lot of friends there.
For those who actually care about basketball, I heard that the Oss girls are doing quite well at the Blue Chip tournament (an NCAA sanctioned event) in Richmond this weekend against AAU teams from all over the east coast. Geno, UNC and many others there. Artice on UCONN blog said Geno went primarily to see Saniya. I belive they are 4-1 with one game to go. Saniya is swishing and dishing.
@ hs try a different flavor koolaid, Dan is just what people say he is, the good and bad, if you don’t see the whole picture you end up sounding just as uninformed as the next Bozo on the bus.
Thanks MassTransit.
@HS, Once again you make my point You admittedly have “long and close ties to the Oss community” and I admire you for your loyalty. I only wish you could be more objective in your perspective which would add to the credibility of your posts. For example you state that the “initial post was referring to Ricci” and that I “had to chime in with” negativity. Instead you should scroll above and note that the initial post was actually about Saniya Chong and had nothing to do with Ricci until YOU brought it up. And, once again, I said nothing negative about Coach Ricci other than to say that he is not the ONLY coach who goes the extra mile. By citing the Richmond VA. Blue Chip Tournament results you call even further attention to your obvious biases. Other than a few overzealous O supporters, Who Cares? ( I know Geno might be there but he can drop his offer to her quicker than a lizard in a snake pit if he finds someone better.)
C’mon let’s let this go! Ossining will more than likely be the NYSPHSAA champions next season with a great shot to win the Federations as well. Chong is a very special talent and Ricci is an excellent coach. What the hell more do I have to say?
Uncle sounds apropriate
Chong is not going to any d1 school she doesnt have the grades , if she did have the grades and if she is as good as everyones says she is why hasn’t Uconn offered her ride.
thanks for that info Indian, cause with this blog you would think she was flawless..I guess ricci doesn’t do as much as @HS says if his kid isn’t making the grade, a talent like that should do just as well in the classroom or is it only about ball. FYI that Richmond tournament is weak, why weren’t they at Boo Williams ? That’s where all of the top players in the country were, such as Kaela Davis, Iesha Small, Teana Muldrow, Imani Tilford, Myesha Hines Allen, Erica Brown, Diamond Deshields just to name a few…and to mimic Indian interest is one thing an offer is a whole nother ball game…
You guys have no idea what/if UCONN has offered. Apparently. I understand the kid has solid B grades. And for the record, many, if not the majority of D1 athletes, are barely eligible. She is taking her time to choose the right fit. She will pretty much go wherever she wants. As far as why the team went to Blue Chip, these tournaments are invite only. The fact that a HS team starting two rising sophomores and a rising 8th grader got invited is extremely impressive.
TILFORD WACK CANT EVEN PLAY WOODLANDS BB …AT BOO SHE WAS GARBAGE
How come. Ricci went to blue chip instead of going to where the real basketball was being played this past weekend..Boo Williams….because everyone who is good was at boo that is why they did well at blue chip…..
As someoe else said, before you’re post, it’s invite only. For a HS team to get invited to any of these tournaments is great. Why are you so worried about it? You see any oter HS teams around here doing this?
You gotta admit it’s funny that a HS coach brings his team down to National Tournament during LAX season (which he coaches) and instead of appreciating it we have to hear, “well, other coaches do it too”, “why didn’t they go to Boo Williams” and of course “they only did good because the better AAU Teams were at Boo Williams”. Give me a break.
Like always, you guys are clueless when it comes to AAU basketball. I would be foolish to try to compare Boo Williams, Blue Chip or The Deep South as a whole. Boo Williams has some of the best Nike teams in the Country come in to play. Deep South has some of the best Fila teams come in and play. But for Boo Williams they have one Nike bracket with Elite Nike teams like Boo, DFW, Georgia Metros, Belles and M Tartants. Beside a handful of them teams which you have to be a Elite Nike team to be in that bracket, the other brackets are just like the other tournaments. LI Lighting Lawniszak which won the 2nd Boo Williams bracket. Their were more than a dozen teams at Blue Chip that could have beaten the LI Lighting and or has already beaten them. Teams like the NJ Demons and The Runnin Rebels could play and have already beaten teams in that Elite Nike Bracket. So to say Boo is the end all is not true, do they have very good AAU teams yes. But the other tournaments have very good teams also. Hudson River Breeze made a good showing at a tournament that they were invited to for free, The Center Court Challenge and played well. They got to play in front of over a 100 D1 college coaches all weekend and have some of the Elite head coaches in College basketball leave Boo and come and watch them play. Ms. Chong made out great with picking up new offers and sealing the deal with other offers like Coach G from UCONN. the other girls while young show what they can do in front of college coaches also. If you do this long enough you will learn it doesn’t matter what tournament your in or what court you play on, if you are a player the college coaches know it and they will even go to a playground to see you play. In closing Boo Williams is a Good tournament with very good teams, but their is a lot out there for everyone.
How did Westchester Hoopers do in that tournament? Any other local teams go and how did they do?
Why does he coach girls lax , if he cared about girls lax he would be practicing 6 days a week , just like bball , I guess he does it just to collect a check.
Who is on the NJ demons?...they beat JR’s team by 20 or so…JR’s team beat on the hoopers by 40
The demons had that kid maubrey that is going to Norte dame…her sister is on there and some good players from new jersey
No big thing to beat the hoppers….not worth mentioning
Did the hoopers beat the hoppers or did the hoppers beat the hoopers? ( Hey Hs, Did I say anything bad about coach Ricci?)
No, just more gibberish. Still don’t know why you come on here though. There has to be some connection but you’re not very forthcoming now are you?
I come on primarily to annoy you! BTW what is your connection to the coach? Not very forthcoming are you?
GORDON- To West Virginia. Congrats to a great kid
West Virginia is turning into Mt Vernon South.
@WHY: There are several good reasons Ricci coaches girls lax. No need to expound on them here. You really do not want to know. You just want to come on here and degrade Ricci and Ossining.
Stanner: stop worrying about who hsbbfan is. Maybe he is your Daddy. Do I care who you are? NO!!! Do I ask why an AARP member who says he grew up in Queens is so obsessed with Section One girls hoops? NO!!!! Do I ask why you have to constantly critique everything Ossining fans do and say? NO!!!!!
Get over yourself. I am busy making reservations for 2 weekends in the Capitol District in late March 2013 and you are busy making a fool of yourself on this blog as always.
Boo is a tougher tournament than blue chip.Blue chip had no teams from the following states: Georgia,California,Ohio,Indiana,Illinois,Texas etc.Blue chip is predominately tri-state and mid_atlantic.Alot of Local Virginia teams also. There is a greater percentage of stronger teams by far at Boo, beyond the one bracket and 5 teams that “the truth”mentioned.just look at the list of teams that attend each….it speaks for itself.
Look ma, Caught another fish!
Hey scanner…ever hear of Jenny Craig…

Hey Chief, How did those double weekend reservations work out for you this past season?
Putz, I mean StannerGrad, didn’t have any this year. Sorry to disappoint you. Now go crawl back under your rock.
Hey Chief, I didn’t think anyone else would stoop to the personal insult level that hs reverts to virtually every time he posts but even you joined his club this time. We all know this is a self esteem problem for hs but what about you?
