#4 Comment By Why Coach? On May 31, 2012 @ 2:25 pm

To Coaches – Yeah it is probably those same two guys that volunteer their time and spend their own money to coach these kids so they have the opportunity to play against the top kids from around the state. So all you “Know it Alls” can come on here and blast them pubilicly to your hearts content.

TO Why C- OOOHH! It looks like the Ossining crazies are going on the offensive, or should I say the early bird defense…....

Well, we all hope Reilly is not the Coach of this team. Enough is enough. Ricci would be better. Maybe Martinez. He coaches the college girls for the state games and Blind Brook. Maybe, Gina, does a great job at Irvington. Something different. Something better for the players.

#7 Comment By Hoops On May 31, 2012 @ 6:07 pm

YesRicci and Reilly – don’t think they do a bad job but the third buffoon with them is a total tool

Is there anything posted on this blog that doesn’t piss someone off? Enough!!

#10 Comment By Hoops On June 1, 2012 @ 9:46 am

I know if I was a local high school player I would love to play for this team. I mean you know Chong is going to get 40 shots a game then the rest of the Ossining girls will get the other 10 shots. I guess if you like to play defense and rebound then you will be a great fit for this team.

#11 Comment By hsbbfan On June 1, 2012 @ 9:57 am

You guys are unbelievable. Who should take the shots? Your kid?

#12 Comment By New team On June 1, 2012 @ 2:33 pm

You all are missing the point. I think folks are tired of Reilly and Ricci. Reilly is not even a varsity or college coach. The players should experience different coaches. Many players do not like Reilly’s style. Some folks seem not to like Ricci’s style. Many parents do not like Reilly’s style. There are plenty of great coaches in Section1. And Reilly is not even an official Section 1 coach. So i think someone was saying, have a different coach.

#13 Comment By youshouldcoach On June 1, 2012 @ 4:45 pm

I have a solution. Why don’t you start your own team? Let’s see who wants to play for you.

This tournament was developed as a result of NYS cancelling Empire State Games. It gives the girls a chance to compete against the better players in other parts of the state over the summer. It’s all good. There’s really nothing bad about it so why try to make it bad? The coaches do not get paid. And contrary to a few, very few, the two coaches you mentioned get all the better players wanting to play for them. Whether here, Empires or AAU. And that’s a fact. They’ve had kids from Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess Counties. The bottom line is if the kids are good they will play. If not, well then their parents get to come on here and bad mouth people.

#14 Comment By Why coach? On June 1, 2012 @ 4:48 pm

Like I said the know it all’s have spoken.
The fact of tge matter is you must be a member of the BCANY to coach and that organization is open to HS as well as AAU coaches. You must pay a fee to belong to this association and unfortunately most of the section one coaches are not members.

#15 Comment By youshouldcoach On June 1, 2012 @ 5:12 pm

But that’s who’s having the tournament! So what is your point? Doesn’t your town have Rec ball or some lower level travel team? What is it that you want?

#16 Comment By WRONG On June 1, 2012 @ 5:31 pm

Dear “you should coach” –
Nothing wrong with people voicing their opinions on here. If someone doesn’t like a certain coach, that’s fair comment, as opposed to others who say nasty things about the girls themselves.

And your comment that “the two coaches you mentioned get all the better players wanting to play for them. Whether here, Empires or AAU” is blatantly false. There are other coaches out there who have exceptional girls playing for them – players who end up at D1 and elite D3s. Most important, they are coaches who are good role models for the girls, who treat them with respect. I could say more, but I won’t. The bottom line is that there are some parents who don’t approve of the way coaches coach—and it has nothing to do with whether their girls are getting a lot of playing time.

#17 Comment By ChiefWildEagle On June 1, 2012 @ 11:45 pm

WRONG…just who are these other coaches? More importantly who are these other D1 players and “eliteD3s”? Please fill us all in. By the way, just what is an “elite D3”? D1 is D1 and D3 is D3, there is a big difference there. Enlighten me about “elite D3”, please do.

#18 Comment By hsbbfan On June 2, 2012 @ 12:49 am

Apparently you are one who likes some other coach. Thats certainly your perogative. So have your kid go play for them. Who’s stopping you? Why do you worry so much about what the coaches you do not like are doing? Something doesnt line up with your story.

#19 Comment By ballfan&parent On June 2, 2012 @ 8:47 pm

Hey there hsbbfan. It’s prerogative not perogative, and I agree with WRONG and New team. What doesn’t “line up” with what WRONG said? I understood it perfectly and my kid already plays for another coach. Okay coach?

Omg hsbbfan get off Riccis jock! He’s not the end all of coaches! Yes he’s good,I like him, have coached vs him and he’s good but stop with this he’s all in it for the girls,etc..the man has an agenda get over it!!!Once someone criticizes señor Dan – they are evil, bitter, have an agenda,etc..are there better candidates probably but ricci has the title so let’s go with it…ok even before the supposed tryouts here will be the team( tryouts are 6/12..today is 6/2)chong- OSS/2-3 more girls from OSS/(pardon me don’t know all there names but probably the freshman forward, and maybe espinoza) lai and martins from Irvington ( McMahon should tryout as IMO she should make it) hood and Robinson from Hamilton , plus pahues from am..so now with my named you have 6 names def/4 more possible and the team only takes 10 …why tryout…now you will say you never know what will happen? Get real. Ricci/ really have there mind made up already like last year when Lai couldn’t even tryout due to a stress fracture but a slot was kept for her as she sat on the sidelines during the tryouts

#22 Comment By hsbbfan On June 3, 2012 @ 7:10 am

Stanner, once again you make a very important point.

Ballfanparent-what doesn’t “line up” is that the poster is saying that there are better coachesvand better teams to play for, yet they are obsessed with what this team and these coaches are doing. My point is why bother.

Hoops, its impressive that you know who the top six or so girls are in the area. The reasons to try out are the following: Sometimes girls get better be it experience, maturity or whatever. There may be younger kids who were not on the radar last year. Sometimes kids move into the area.

Regarding BL and her not being able to try out last year, are you sugesting that she should have been disqualified for that? Isn’t she an All State player who played on several championship teams including Empires? And who would you put on the team instead of her, your daughter?

I’m sure the coaches, all coaches, want the best players they can get on their teams. Its really not a conspiracy against you and your kid.

#35 Comment By A Straight Up Parent On June 4, 2012 @ 6:13 am

You all worship Reilly. Well, think about this. Last year and this year his players have broken and are breaking down. Some say from too much training or his pushing. Thinks about that. The rumors of the colleges his players are going to are not top, or even considered, good academic schools. D 1 yes. College education, questionable. But there is more then basketball. These parents put their trust in him. I think the thread is saying let other coaches in section 1 take charge and run some of these programs. Even if Reilly and Riicci are basketball gods, let the players experience other coaches. Don’t take it personally. Players should just experience different coaches. Different training methods. A broad and diverse experience. Maybe then folks can decide if Reilly and Ricci are gods or frauds.

#36 Comment By HIGH TOPS On June 4, 2012 @ 9:38 am

A Straight Up Parent, Well think about this. Reilly is not a NYS Teacher. JR is a AAU basketball coach that will get your kids exposure to college coaches. JR is very demanding coach and expects and will get the most out of the kids that play for him. JR will do his best to get your kids a basketball scholarship. As a Parent it is up to you and your daughter to pick a school that fits her acadmically and athletically JR can’t and won’t promise your kid playing time at the next level. JR has had kids that have reached a little to high.

#37 Comment By High Tops On June 4, 2012 @ 11:14 am

High Tops. Come on. Any player that is great will get college looks. It has nothing to do with JR. If fact, look at his record, he does not deliver D 3 or high academic D 1’s. Plenty of nothing D2 and low academic D 1’s. In the end, it is the kids who get themselves into college. If the JR players play for Westchester Hoopers, Exodus etc, or even Lady Knicks, if a great player will get looks and offers. High Tops, I guess you drank the cool aid too.

#38 Comment By Fan On June 4, 2012 @ 11:29 am

A Straight Up Parent – your comments are ridiculous? Have you looked at the schools his last 15 players are attending? These are the same schools that the majority of the Westchester/ Rockland kids are attending, that are not athletes. True they are not Harvard or Yale, but get off your high horse what percentage of kids attend Ivy’s anyway? The majority of the population does not have that kind of smarts. While I would be fine with other coaches being given a chance, you decided to indirectly throw these young ladies under a bus for the University they selected. I believe most will be very successful in the future due to their work ethic.

Folks, answer me one question—why do you think the Lady Knicks asked him to seperate from them. Because he is too good.

#44 Comment By Answer On June 4, 2012 @ 2:43 pm

question….because he can be a hard headed jackbutt who can be highly inappropriate. my daughter played for him many years ago and like most players she had a love hate relationship with him. i can say that outside of his stupid comments he is a caring guy for HIS players. this is also the problem he is not an organization guy he only cares about HIS players. he does not want mediocre players and will try and get rid of them. way back then he use to meet with each one about how school was going, life in general, setup trips to visit colleges that were interested….all on his dime…in no way is he perfect but if u don’t know him why judge….my kid who recently graduated from a fine college and played ball still reaches out to him for advice on certain things and considers him a good friend….i still have not run into the perfect coach and don’t think i will

#45 Comment By out of your minds On June 4, 2012 @ 5:35 pm

Dear Question. PLEASE. You think the Lady Knicks “asked” him to separate from him because he was “too good” ??? What have you been drinking?????? I heard (from good sources) A. He wasn’t give a choice B. He upset parents and others in the way he handled his players especially when he was angry at the way they playerd and C. Parents finally demanded that he get the boot D. There were other INCIDENTS involving JR that made his leaving something that had to happen. Knicks have class Let us know when one of his players gets into Stanford or an Ivie or Williams or Amherst. Agree that these kids get into good academic D!s and these good D3s through their own hard work and good grades not any coach

#46 Comment By JR FAN On June 4, 2012 @ 6:21 pm

I heard one of the players last year was trying so hard to get a ivie or D1 but the knicks fail.So she settle for amherst. Great school but not what the family wanted .I will tell you this much JR could of did it for her with the talent this kid has and thats one example of why he the coach you want your last two yrs of aau.The lady knicks have no coaching staff. When my daughters reach that time in aau we will play for JR.

#47 Comment By StannerGrad. On June 4, 2012 @ 7:08 pm

“could of did it”, “she settle for amherst”, “he the coach” and “a ivie”??? It’s disturbing that each of those are contained in the same paragraph. Hopefully your daughters are not only focused on basketball.

#48 Comment By Question II On June 4, 2012 @ 8:46 pm

Out of your minds. Sorry, i was being sarcastic. It was joke. Most people believe JR was asked to leave. I was being sarcastic when I said “he was too good.” As to JR Fan, settling on Amherst is not correct. Amherst is a top tier academic institution (just like the Ivies) and has a great basketball program. JR has not gotten one kid into an Ivie or top tier D 3 in recent years (like Amherst, Tufts, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Colby etc.) But in the end, it is the kids who get themselves into college. In the parents who help their kids get into college. Not the AAU coach. Two of Lady Players (both played for Luke) are going to Tufts and Amherst. You could not ask for much more. What great institutions. And they are playing basketball for winning programs.

#49 Comment By Do You Know What You Are Talking About On June 4, 2012 @ 9:48 pm

Question II, here is a list of some of the schools JR’s players went to. Oh by the way my daughter is one of them. Davidson, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Colgate, Tufts, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Vassar, Carnegie Mellon, Connecticut C. Then there are other great colleges and University that JR’s players go to, most are great fit for the student athletes. Fordham, BC, Villanova, U of Delaware, Fairfield, Manhattan, St Bonaventure, Marist, Quinnipiac, LaSalle, U of Rochester, Scranton and Muhlenberg. Their are many schools, but I figured I would list a few that I knew FYI.

#50 Comment By Question III On June 5, 2012 @ 6:37 am

Think about your answer. Those players all went from the Lady Knicks. This is JR first year on his own. At best you can say the Lady Knicks and JR but not JR alone. Each of those players played for the Lady Knicks.

Some would say that Manhattan, Fairfield, Marist , Quinnipiac Scranton etc are not quality academic institutions. So you are missing the point of the string.

In any event this is JR first year without the Lady Knicks so lets see (and even those kids grew up with the Knicks. Probably the test will be what JR does next year and the year after. So lets all get back together next June and see what JR does on his own with no Lady Knick players or organization behind him.

Also lets see with the Westchester Hoopers do. They are now the number one program in Westchester. Hoopers will deliver their players to better programs then JR anyway.

#51 Comment By nasty and false On June 5, 2012 @ 7:42 am

Sorry JR FAN, FYI the mystery Amherst player you are mentioning was made an offer by at least one Ivy and she had plenty of other D1 interest. I know her and her family and they could not be happier. TUFTS girl had serious D1 interest too and that family also is thrilled. the all of the Knicks team had GREAT offers last year and making stuff up on here is serious so watch yourself haters…....

Community College is great. Big name colleges can be great, too. As Stanner said, a college’s reputation is no predictor of how well you will do in life. All the Section 1 girls are terrific. They work hard and play hard. The only brats I see on here are parents and coaches (probaly) who are putting down kids coaches and parents because of jealousy. Land Rover? Muffy? Thought this blog was about basketball???

Is Hamlin coming back? Who will coach Scarsdale?

Please, the college kids get plenty of coverage on this thing called the “internet” with the help of Google … at their school sites, papers, other worthwhile points of information. Here is just for kicking around kids and their families, so be sincere, you don’t ‘need’ this low level, non moderated blog to ‘hear’ about anyone that already graduated.

Is this the class warfare portion of the site? Don’t you have some baseball cards to catalog or a porn collection to keep you busy in the offseason?

#60 Comment By Streaming Parents On June 5, 2012 @ 4:49 pm

Agreed. We should be proud of all our Section 1 players, Whether they go to D1 D2 or D 3. We should support our Section 1 coaches. Since AAU is voluntary, players and parents have a host of programs to chose from, all of which have shown success —- Lady Knicks, New York Pride, JR, Westchester Hoopers, Exodus and on and on. No need to bash. There are enough programs to choose from and all allow for exposure. You just need to be on the court and at a tournament to be seen. It is the parents and players who notifiy and generate interest. It is the AAU who allow their work to come to fruitition.

#61 Comment By fandom On June 6, 2012 @ 11:11 am

Good point. It is the players and parents who generate the interest from coaches. NOT THE AAU COACH although some of them sell a bill of goods to parents in which they (parents) buy into. The AAU coach is the last person a college coach wants to deal with.

#64 Comment By D1 RULES On June 7, 2012 @ 6:39 pm

D1 supplies the great competitive high level of play of bball and you can also get an A+ education.
Yes, there are a group of 40-50 (nationwide) academically gifted girls that get D1 offers but elect to play at a Tufts, Amherst or Hopkins, etc., etc. This is a very very very small percentage of the D3 bball population. Unfortunately, there are people (parents) who are using this small sampling of student athletes to justify that D3 is a better choice. Obviously, for some it is a better choice(all 2-3%). Unfortunately, this same group of parents (vast majority) are just disgruntaled or frustrated that their daughter did not get a scholarship so they use the Tufts/Hopkins model.

Sorry, the truth is a little frustrating to some. See below- You can get a D1 Great academic education and play at a high level. Not to mention- the cost is affordable to all…

D1 Rules>> > Great stats, but completely made up. You haven’t surveyed the girls playing at great D3 schools nationwide and verified whether (or not) they had D1 offers. You’ve decided that there are 40/50 such girls nationwide? I think that’s BS. And there are plenty of girls now playing D1 who would have given it all up in a heartbeat to play for a competitive D3 school with a stellar academic reputation (Hopkins, etc) – IF they had the grades, IF they were recruited, and IF they could pay the tutition.

What is the “Tufts/Hopkins model?” Do you really think that girls who were recruited to play for these excellent teams (and others) are lying about whether it was their first choice? Really, D1 RULES??? How does that lie go?? >> xxxxxx was recruiting me and giving me money, and it used to be my first choice – but now (the lie) Hopkins is my new first choice (really – the poor dear is settling for Hopkins) because the coach recruited me, my parents will pay tuition (or I got an academic scholarship), and so I’ll be playing there??

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? I have a suggestion. Instead of worrying about whether Sally might be telling a lie about what her very top/ideal/first choice was >> just accept it and congratulate her. Doing otherwise is really more about your resentment and jealousy than anything else.

D3, D2, D1 or even (GASP) giving up basketball to focus on studying >> GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

LOl. My daughter is actually on scholarship. When she was being recruited the coaches (from all 3 levels) called our house directly (contact period) from the information they have from the coaches packet they purchase at live period events. Numerous coaches have told us that they do not like to deal with the AAU coaches but do appease them and would much rather deal with the hs coach, player and players parents who are ultimately making the decision. If your recruited daughter’s AAU coach is fielding the calls you probably are not getting all the information you need or able to have your child ask the proper questions needed to be asked during the recruiting process. If you read basketball articles, blogs, etc… you hear horror story after horror story of misconduct by AAU coaches who end up bouncing from team to team.

Also he tells his girls to be committed but some girls come and go as they wish and other girls never miss a game or a practice and dont get rewarded. I guess the star players can do whatever they want and the truely dedicated players get shafted.

Ossining Indians give me a break- u dont know what you are talking about- my daughter is on the team and all the girls are committed and make most if not all of the practices and games. Some have other sports commitments and occasionally there are conflicts. Others may have family obligations. The AAU team is to develop all players and they get equal playing time.

wow, congrats to Martins for Lehigh. The best Riley could do for his other players is Marist and Manhattan College. Could not obtain better academic schools. Interesting. They could have probably found better schools on their own. But if this is what his girls want, congrats. Good luck to all three.

Where did you go to college? It seems really strange to me that people are questioning fine academic institutions because they are “not good enough.” Marist and Manhattan are fine schools. You don’t know the wishes of the girls. Maybe they aren’t as strong academically, or maybe they wanted to stay close to home, or maybe they met wit the coaches and loved the school and program. Seems strange that people bash higher education. You should be applouding these girls!!

I think the point being made is that with basketball could these girls find better academic schools. Lehigh is a great institution. The question was with resepct to the other colleges. Which are not really ranked acadaemically. The other question was why did Reilly not do better for them.

#127 Comment By Westchester On June 26, 2012 @ 5:17 pm

Why did Reilly not do better for them?

What kind of moronic question is that. The college coaches watch the girls play and assess their skills. The AAU coach can assist but these ladies get the scholarships on skills, hustle, and how the act on and off the court with other players, coaches, and refs.

Maybe Lai or Parahaus always wanted to go to Marist / Manhattan? Or maybe they wanted to go to XYZ school but they did not need a PG or shooting guard. All I know is what a great accomplishment and a huge financial burden off their backs.

#128 Comment By Unbelievable ! On June 26, 2012 @ 7:35 pm

Martins- Congrats ! Lai -Congrats ! Two great HS players with a lot of choices.

Lehigh full ride = Jackpot ! Great bball program which is always on or near the top in Patriot League. Great Academics – it’s not Princeton, Tufts, or Hopkins but it’s AWESOME academics.

Marist full ride = Jackpot! Great Mid major program. Perennial Winner. Very good school.

Unfortunately, there are the same sick parents on here whose daughters got no D1 offers so they try to make the lame argument that D3 is better than D1 by using the Amherst example and Tufts example. Yes, you disgruntled, jealous parents- You keep talking about that tiny percentage of genius kids that elect to go D3 instead of D1. Your spent Thosands on your kid who couldn’t get recruited to D1 so now it’s all about D3 being better than D1- WRONG !

I wish them luck.

#132 Comment By AAU Coach On June 27, 2012 @ 2:51 pm

Congrats to all 3 girls….no come on do you really think these coaches got them there scholarships?? You think a college coach is giving a 4 yr full ride to a kid because madman Reilly coaches them?they are giving them a ride bc dancing Dan Ricci does a buffoon dance as he coaches them? Do you think the salesman Brian I’m a hooper wouldn’t you like to be a hooper too Williams is getting them a scholarship because of his gift of gab? Get over yourselves people…an aau coach puts his kids in good tournaments, calls a couple of favors to get some coach to see the kid ( if he has them) ,let’s the kids play! The kid still has to impress the college coach with her skills,be a recruitable kid( grades, sat scores, good citizen) ..so it is said kid who earns it and any aau coach claiming otherwise is hitting himself…congrats to Lai,Martins ,and Maeve your hard work paid off

It seems to me Lehigh is a great fit for Ms. Martins. It is an excellent academic school. The difference between a Lehigh and an Ivy is minimal. If you work hard and do well at Lehigh, you can write your ticket, in almost any career. Having seem Ms. Martins play many times, I feel she has chosen the best level of competition for her abilities. Congratulations to her and her family, on a job well done.

Bill O’Reilly and Rik Smits are Marist grads who seemed to do pretty well for themselves. I believe that Lai, Martins and Maeve will be successful in life wherever they go to college. Rating colleges might sell magazines but happiness and lifetime accomplishments have NOTHING to do with where anyone goes to school. (BTW I believe the Lady Red Foxes have gone to the sweet 16 a couple of times in the past few years)

I’m curious what school Saniya will pick? I guess we will know soon. Some of the blogs mentioned she narrowed down her schools the the following UConn, Maryland, Miami, Louisville, Ohio UNC.
Most players at the D1 level I have met LOVE the game. The ones I’m confused by are the player or parent that want the child in the biggest NAME basketball school, and that was the major consideration. While its obvious that they may sit the bench the majority of the 4 year basketball career. I don’t feel this is the case with Saniya after meeting her a few times and seeing her play a lot. I don’t think it’s about her being the star or picking the biggest name (but with her talent all names are big). I think she will play, and do well at any of the schools mentioned in the blogs. Good luck to her and the other players that have committed at any level.

Congrats to Kristen Mcloughlin and Adrea Espinoza for winning the 3 point contest for HUDSON VALLEY!!!!
