Chong narrows college list down to four

Posted By Rob Cristino On July 12, 2012 @ 5:46 pm In Uncategorized | Comments Disabled

In case you missed it, my colleague James Carlucci wrote a story in today’s paper on Saniya Chong and her dominating performance at the Blue Chip USA Invitational at York, Pa., which took place this past weekend.

Chong averaged 40 points per game against some top competition, as her Hudson River Breeze team, which is composed of girls from the Ossining High School varsity team and led by Ossining coach Dan Ricci, finished 5-1 in the tournament.

Chong has also narrowed her college choices down to four schools, including: UConn, Maryland, Ohio State, and Louisville.

You can read the story here [1].

I hope she makes her choice before the season starts, good luck

#2 Comment By hsbbfan On July 12, 2012 @ 8:39 pm

That is very impressive that she played that well on that stage against that competition.

#3 Comment By Westchester On July 12, 2012 @ 10:07 pm

I hope she picks Uconn for the selfish reason that I can see her play on TV and possibly live!

Great job by DR and HRB to go 5-1. Looks like the only loss was by low single digits!

#4 Comment By StannerGrad. On July 13, 2012 @ 4:57 pm

This young lady is truly one of the most impressive talents to ever come out of, not only section one, but NY State as well. It will be a treat to watch her perform during her Senior year of high school. Maybe this question is premature but does anyone know the names of Ossining’s non league opponents for the ‘12-’13 season?

#5 Comment By Rockland county On July 13, 2012 @ 7:10 pm

Some schedules are up on the website/about 85pct complete

#6 Comment By Rockland county On July 13, 2012 @ 10:21 pm

Ok stand corrected..Ossining only has 6 of there 18 games listed..my team has 15 of the 18( that’s where I got the 85%)

#7 Comment By hsbbfan On July 14, 2012 @ 6:43 am

I heard they are going to play a much expanded sched. Should be some good ones. This Maryland tourn at the end of the month has some national level teams.

Fan, I understand where you’re coming from but the headline “Chong Narrows Choice” etc. is about her. (ps, I have been called a hater on numerous occasions but you have to give her props)

#10 Comment By hsbbfan On July 14, 2012 @ 10:50 pm

That’s probably Bernardo again. Just ignore him like everyone else does.

#11 Comment By north county 24 On July 15, 2012 @ 7:00 am

I would like to see Ms. Chong consider lower profile schools, where she would almost be guaranteed playing time. Of the schools listed, I think, Ohio St. and Louisville would give her the best chance for playing time.

#12 Comment By hsbbfan On July 15, 2012 @ 7:23 am

Perhaps, but you don’t know who they recruited. Watching UConn in the playoffs this year it appeared that one of their weaknesses was driving to the hoop. Which is one of Saniya’s strengths. That and distributing the ball which she also does well. Hartley’s not a true point guard.

Gentlemen:

As I read these blogs it amazes me, the comments and lack of knowlegde some of you have about these players. Let these young ladies enjoy their precious moments playing basketball. Unless you were a great coach or player “Stop Hating” and whatever choices they make when the time comes just remember “It is better to be a “Has Been” than a “Never Was”. Ladies, good luck in the upcoming season.

#19 Comment By hsbbfan On July 16, 2012 @ 10:54 am

Why hate even if you were “a great coach or player”? Why hate at all? Isn’t that a better point?

#20 Comment By Section 1 B Ball Fan On July 16, 2012 @ 11:20 am

Hood Robinson and Silfen do not even play for JR.

Only Pilla and Celaj still play for JR.

But agreed the thread should be positive, not negative.

Chong, at any of those schools, would do well, Louisville would be my hope, their style lends itself to hers. Ricci could go to the Derby instead of Mohegan Sun and we would all get to see her on tv.
@hsbbfan too much coolaid for you? AB has some valid points just doesn’t present them very well. As a HSBBfan you should know what short commings these high profile local coaches have.

Aldo is funny. “Give $3000 and I’ll get your kid a scholarship” I’ll go in the C division at Blue Chip so I can go 4-2.

#51 Comment By Hsbbfan On July 28, 2012 @ 4:17 pm

You don’t pick your division Bernardo. It doesnt matter so much what your record is as much as it does how the kids perform in the games. Winning ames does mean you advance and get anoter game or two. Why are you so unhappy?

#52 Comment By wOw On July 28, 2012 @ 5:39 pm

HSBC – U don’t what your talking about. If I was entering my team at Penn St., Chicago, Boo,

etc. , I can certainly choose the level (otherwise know as division) Not all the time, but most of the time. No one would put the top Philly Belles team in a showcase just playing against any team that might be equivalent to an average HS team. So the director or (money maker) of the showcase trys to categorize the teams to prevent Aldo’s team from playing the top Philly Belles team so the score wouldn’t be 105-12. Therefore, the director puts Aldo’s team (i’m just using Aldo as an example- no offense) against the Philly Belles 6th or 7th best team so Aldo (example only) wins in Double OT. Henceforth, coaches like Aldo can come back home 5 days later and say “look, I’m a great coach, and your kid will get a scholarship”...
HSBC- you talk like a know-it all , but I think you are just a Kool Aid guy that it is a big OSS. worshiper.

#53 Comment By Hsbbfan On July 28, 2012 @ 6:42 pm

And you’re some disgruntled moron. You don’t have to win tournaments to get looks. You just ave to be there and do well. If youre not on an All-Star team its even more impressive if you do well. What the hell are you drinking?

#54 Comment By Hsbbfan On July 28, 2012 @ 6:43 pm

Jealous Juice?

#55 Comment By wOw On July 28, 2012 @ 9:49 pm

Hsbc- Now,Now don’t get fresh ! I never said you have to win tournaments to get looks. But some Aldo type coaches think that way so they “play down” in the tournament instead of “playing up” just so they could say they have a good team. I’d rather go 1-5 and play great teams with coaches watching than go 5-1 playing all-star CYO teams.

BTW Hsbc- why don’t you take that poster of the Ossining team down in your bedroom, and get an adult hobby like work.

#56 Comment By Hsbbfan On July 28, 2012 @ 11:07 pm

Me? And what exactly is your purpose here? To keep changing your name and trashing people?

So what tournaments do you take your team to? Oh, you don’t have a team? Just like to second guess everyone else? I see.

What other HS team goes to out of state tourns like Ossining does to make themselves better? In any bracket?

Ohsbbfan, Although I am very much against the negativity posted by a few individuals I really do wonder what the big deal hype is all about when a team from the area wins a summer tournament. Is it a nice accomplishment? Yes. Does it mean anything in the long run? I think not. I’m taking nothing away from the kids, parents and coaches who put so much of their time into making these girls better people and athletes but, c’mon, get a perspective. And BTW, whenever someone disagrees with you they are referred to as a “loser”, a drunk or a “disgruntled moron.” And the irony of it all is that you lecture them by asking THEM to “get a life.” Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

#91 Comment By Hsbbfan On August 5, 2012 @ 11:09 pm

You know you really are a moron. The guys spouting profane sexual inuendo on a HS blog and youre really going to come on here and have a problem with me? You are a Complete and total jerk. Period.

What does it mean in the long run? What does any of it mean in the long run? This is a HS basketball blog set up for the sole purpose of discussing same. If you are so uninterested in the topic why on earth are you on here stalking it so much? You are one sick SOB.

Normal people come on here giving scores and updates. When someone comes on here like this jerk, or perhaps you, going negative or profane we have a right to tell them to flake off. That’s what normal, respectable people do.

A normal response to the tourn update shoud be something like, “congrats” or “way to go HV”. Not, “go suck someones ….”. Are you crazy? You have lost any credibility that you hoped to have on this blog with your defense of this guy. Unless of course, you’re one in the same.

#92 Comment By Oh yeah On August 5, 2012 @ 11:18 pm

HSBBFAN I totally agree. That was some of the most intense basketball I have seen in a very long time. Our local young men and women came TOGETHER and played their hearts out. We were running from the boys game to the girls game every chance we got. Both gold games went on during the same time!

The kids all came together and played as one! Amazing Job!

My daughter had a great exp. never played for these coaches before but she learned a lot in a very short period of time. Thanks for the opportunity and an exciting weekend.

#95 Comment By StannerGrad. On August 6, 2012 @ 7:44 am

OHSBBFAN, Where does all your rage and hate come from? Your vitriolic and bitter response to me and others proves my exact point about you. Whenever someone offers an opposing view you launch into an attack mode. Debaters score points by presenting solid logic. Bullies put others down in an effort to look good and mask their own insecurities. You are a classic bully!
And BTW, please reread my post. I believe it began with “although I am very much against the negativity posted by a few individuals”.... Have a nice day!

#96 Comment By Appalled On August 6, 2012 @ 10:37 am

StannerGrad – i’m sorry, but i’m completely with Hsbbfan on this one. Just because you hate Dan Ricci, don’t overlook what that mindless weirdo said. Ricci Ticci Toc didn’t offer an opposing view, he is being vulgar and innappropriate. He is bashing people with sexual innuendos on a blog discssing High School Girls. How can you defend him? Just because you started a post with “although I am very much against the negativity posted by a few individuals,” doesn’t mean you can then backtrack and stick up for him. The posts on this blog often turn nasty, but this is downright disturbing. To think, that these are grown men writing things like this on a blog about young girlls makes is especially disturbing. I will be emailing the Journal News about this! I don’t want my daughter reading this!

#97 Comment By ChiefWildEagle On August 6, 2012 @ 3:49 pm

Stanner, I seem to recollect that it was mentioned on the blog that you are a Section One basketball official. Please varify, are you indeed an official?

#98 Comment By hsbbfan On August 6, 2012 @ 4:43 pm

“Opposing view”? I can handle opposing views. But I will not put up with vulgarity and anonymous trashing of good people, both students and coaches, on a HS blog. And you shouldn’t either my friend. But apparently we view the world differently. The only time I attack anyone of here is if they are senselessly attacking a student or a coach. You seem hell bent on defending every wacko on here. I hope to hell you’re not involved with the kids in any way.

#99 Comment By StannerGrad. On August 6, 2012 @ 6:07 pm

To Appalled, Chief and Ohsbbfan, I truly do not even remotely understand why any one of you would believe that I have “defended” (your word Appalled) “every wacko on here.” Perhaps you guys possess inside information to which I am not privy but I have NO IDEA who Bernardo or Ricci Ticci might be and I really don’t give a damn. Ricci hater? How do you surmise that? Is it because I have in the past criticized some of his on-court behavior? Have you ever read several of my other posts which describe him as an excellent coach who repeatedly goes the extra mile on behalf of his players and their families? Have you EVER read a post from me that EVER criticized or put down ANY of the young women that play HS hoops in Section One?
My primary gripe is with you, Ohsbbfan. You have only one perspective and become so self righteous whenever anyone disagrees with your opinions. I don’t know who you are but you are clearly way to close to the Ossining team to the point that it scares me. You should accurately describe yourself as an Ossining HS Basketball fan rather than a fan in general. And to you Chief I have been close to HS hoops in Section One for many years and have defended officials when I believe they have been unfairly victimized but I am most certainly not one of them.
And finally to you Ohsbbfan, are you using the same name whenever you post? You have accused me of doing that but a few other bloggers seem to post opinions which not only share an identical philosophy but use very similar language and insults whenever they offer opinions. Go Pride!

Not defending or being cute. Just responding to the question I was asked. Agree that RTT was way over the top.
