BCANY Summer Hoops Festival

Posted By Rob Cristino On August 6, 2012 @ 5:16 pm In Uncategorized | Comments Disabled

The Section 1 Hudson Valley girls basketball team brought home the gold last night at the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival with a 91-90 win over Central at Johnson City.

Hudson Valley scraped out the gold medal game victory with help from Ossining’s Destini Walker, who converted two free throws with zero time remaining on the clock to give the Section 1 representatives the championship.

“This is a big confidence boost for (Walker),” Hudson Valley coach Dan Ricci said. “With 28 points, she was our leading scorer, and she played way bigger than herself.”

Walker led Hudson Valley, which went undefeated in the five tournament games, with 28 points.

Hamilton’s Maia Hood scored 25 points in the championship game and Ossining’s Saniya Chong, who was named MVP of the tournament, added 23 points in the win.

Earlier in the day, Hudson Valley had easily defeated Southern Tier 96-61 led by Chong’s 29 points and Hood’s 13.

Was the team at full strength or were some of the previous listed girls injured? Good job either way! Way to bring home the gold!

Words going around town Maia Hood was the real MVP.

#3 Comment By Rockland On August 6, 2012 @ 8:28 pm

Hood and chong together…would take those 2 anyway…Mia is a good, solid, dynamic player but saniya is hands down the best…both will go far( and nice bright young ladies)

Nice try Mr. Hood. :0

#5 Comment By BCANY2 On August 7, 2012 @ 1:51 pm

I heard the same about Hood.. We know what Saniya is going to do, or better yet what Coach Ricci is going to allow her to do, but Maia shined despite that and was thee most consistent player for the 5games… Good for the Hudson Valley Area and Westchester as a whole!!!!!!!!

#6 Comment By HVparent On August 7, 2012 @ 7:14 pm

Thats a bit of a stretch there. There was one clear MVP at the tournament. Trust me, the right gurl got the hardware.

M played great. With A out she had to step up and play the 5 and she did an excellent job. Very tough kid. But I’m not sure at 5’7” she has a big future at the next level in the post. I wish allthe girls the best of luck. Great group of girls. Coaches were great.

I do have to agree with Blaim though: Coach Ricci=HARD FOUGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. I say give Dan all the blaim you want for another well coached team.

#29 Comment By Illegal On August 16, 2012 @ 12:41 pm

@Hsbbfan – these people like to make themselves feel better and believe that there is some sort of Ossining/Dan Ricci conspiracy going on, that’s why their daughters didn’t make the team or Ossining beat their daughters team. They say that Sinaya is too old, and that Dan “steals” players by convincing an entire family to uproot and move to Ossining…..ridiculous!!! There is no illegal activity. For people who dislike Dan, you guys sure do spend a lot of time talking about him. From jealousy stems hatred….........

If this is true about Hunter going to CTK will Ossining play them?? Would be fun to watch.

#48 Comment By Hsbbfan On August 19, 2012 @ 2:00 pm

Even you can put a ball in someones hand. Thats the easy part.

There’s a lot more to being a student athlete than putting a ball in someones hands my friend.

If you’re in an obscure sitation where no one is seeing you would have a point. But then again, thats what the AAU circuit is for. That being said, the girl you mentioned is getting much more eposure playing with her HS and HR Breeze team than she is at 15U AAU tourns. Not too many scouts go to 15U tourns. Not worth their time.

Other things to consider at a place like Ossining is the academic, administrative and community support you get. Its priceless. With the sched they supposed to be playing this year the competition (including CTK) is on par with a city sched. Not too mention the distractions and safety factors. Think of “Chicken” from Bergtram. Poor kid.

The haters just wont go away. Or should I say, the hater. Petty jealousy. The kid almost never played in the 4th qtr last year or the year before in the reg season. And still avgd some 35 pts. I bet its the same guy who asks a question, (for the purpose of starting an argument) then criticizes the person who answers. “Why do you keep talking about her”, better question might be, why do you keep asking about her?

#82 Comment By Section One On September 2, 2012 @ 9:55 am

@ in the no- As usual, you and “coach” and hsbbfan etc. In your book- if one is not a worshipper, (like you), then one is a hater. I’m not sure what games you were at, but Chong did a lot of mopping up in 4th qts. She should have sat out 90% of the games in the 4th qt. but she didn’t because it was Ossining’s job to go for blood and destroy teams and pad the stats..
THAT’s A FACT that only the worshippers will deny.
Hey ya know what- Let’s keep tract of her 4th qt. mins this season when they are winning by more than 20 pts. after 3rd. qt.

#83 Comment By north county 24 On September 2, 2012 @ 11:32 am

Good decision by Chong to eliminate CONN U. Three of the five recruits from their class of 2014 have now transferred for lack of playing time. They also were high school All Americans. The only two recruits from that class who remain are Hartley and Dolson. I wish she had considered a local Big East school like St. John’s.

#84 Comment By intheknow On September 2, 2012 @ 12:51 pm

More baseless rumors.

So secrion one statistician, do you have any 4th qtr stats? Or just your jealous opinion?

#85 Comment By Section One On September 2, 2012 @ 2:46 pm

@ in the know- Let’s move forward…. I will keep a close eye on how Coach K (oh i mean Coach R) is letting her play after the 3rd qt is done and Oss. is up by 20 pts. I would like to make a healthy wager on that one ! It’s all about crushing teams and padding stats…. He won’t change, and you will lose the bet.

#86 Comment By Hsbbfan On September 2, 2012 @ 8:18 pm

Interesting conversation. As someone who attended just about every game last year i can ssycwith certainty that she rarely played in the 4th qtr at all never mind the whole thing. If she did she would have avgd close to 50. Whats a cosch supposed to do not let a kid play in the 2nd half? Sounds like this guys kid didnt get the PT that he wanted her to. Otherwise, why would he care??

#87 Comment By Section One On September 2, 2012 @ 10:31 pm

Ok Coach. Whatever you say. But I’ll be taking notes in the 4th qt this year when it’s Oss.75 and opponent 41 and she is still in.

#88 Comment By ChiefWildEagle On September 2, 2012 @ 11:06 pm

@ Section One, with the schedule Ossining has for the coming season most games should be close going into the 4th quarter.
LASTLY, stop with the Coach Ricci is posting on the blog schtick. He is not on here and I know for a fact that Hsbbfan is not Coach Ricci. Enough.

#90 Comment By StannerGrad. On September 3, 2012 @ 10:53 am

This might surprise Ohsbbfan and Chief but I completely agree that Coach R and any other coach should be left alone to manage the game however they see fit. They are the ones who spend countless hours with these kids and generally know more than anyone else about what is best for their teams in a given situation. Although I’m generally against blowout wins by any team I wish people would let this particular issue die with regard to Ossining and this particular player.

Dan Ricci has been the coach at Ossining for over 20 years. He has coached hundreds of girls, untold numbers of games at OHS, AAU and Empires. Ossining has gone to Section One final 4 dozens of times and to the state final 4 twice. He has sent many many girls on to play at the next level including D1. Yes Sanya is special player but Ricci’s accomplishments as a coach started long before she put on an Ossining uniform.

Well said!! Some posters on this blog would have you thinking that Dan is making a living off of this talented young lady. He has enjoyed coaching for many years of his life and i’m sure many years after SC graduates from Oss. Get off his back! As far as SC playing in the 4th quarter, it isn’t as clear cut as some may think. Oss for years has requestedmore difficult schedules to prevent blowouts. Is SC supposed to not see the court because she is too good?? I understand late in the 4th, but what if Oss is up by 20 before half? Should she be penalized for being good?

Browne/Columbia Moore/Fairfield Duncan/Lasalle Mercer/UMES. Presently in school are Palmer/WVU Stewart/UMES King/Hampton Watson/Monroe Next yr Gordon/WVU their might be a few more that I do not know about but I can only go back to 05, you can fact check to see if I’m correct but I think it’s right.

Come on, we are not talking about Ivies or Emory, Tufts, Stanford, MIT, Middlebury, Amherst, Chicago, Bowdoin, Rochester, Vassar, Hamilton, Wash U, Colby or any other elite university

Two year colleges are a joke.

So lets not get or high and mighty

Ok so a kid who did poorly in hs and is trying to redeem himself/herself by getting there gpa up to finish at a 4 yr school is a joke? I have to apologize to all the young ladies from MV for making a statement about them, I knew I made a mistake when I commented on how they send kids to school on this blog. People are so negative on here it’s unbelieveable, this blog should change its format and no longer be about sports it should talk about the top academic colleges maybe that will end all the negative stuff on here.

#121 Comment By amused On September 15, 2012 @ 2:02 pm

And another thing the difference between this blog and Varsity Insider is the people on there are sports fans, and the people on here are parents. SAD SAD SAD!!!!!!!!

I do not think folks are being negative but trying to be real. Applaud the MV girls, sure. But really recognize and applaud those girls who do both academics and basketball.

To play basketball at the ivies or emory, tufts, chicago, wash u, bowdoin, middlebury amherst or any other academic school is truly remarkable.

Hey I believe if your kid can get into a good college, no matter where it is, its great.. My kid plays for coach luck who was with the hoopers and she is getting some serious D1 looks and some great D3 looks. Hs coaches should just allow aau to run its course and support the kids during the summer..Ricci loves to coach as well as the lime light, WE GET IT!!!! Who cares, for him to take his whole winter and summer and travel with these kids is commendable..John Reilly can be a maniac also but again they do a bunch of traveling with these kids which other coaches wont do..

Don’t forget Ossining is also losing Espinoza-Hunter to CTK…they will have a solid team(ricci will have them prepared and he’s got Section 1s best player) but going into states they will be tested

#152 Comment By rc hoops On September 27, 2012 @ 6:49 pm

Irvington returns Lai,Martins, and some others so I think Irvington can keep up w/ Ossining but don’t know about Hamilton? Someone said Mia Hood hurt her knee…if she’s out-Hamilton has no shot..if she’s not then Hamilton has a small shot…still think Ossining will win the gold ball

I’m very sad to hear that Destiny is moving, I have enjoyed watching her play she has developed into a great basketball player. It’s a big loss for the pride, huge loss—-I just hope she does well in her new school and she has the same support and guidance given to her in Ossining

#154 Comment By hsbbfan On September 27, 2012 @ 9:54 pm

It definitely will affect them in States but I don’t think they’ll have much trouble in Section. But they did go out and book a very difficult sched to get the team ready for States and get the younger girls more exposure. i really hope her mom thought this through because this was an awesome environment for D to strive both athletically as well as academically.

What is mom supposed to do if it’s what her career and livlehood that depends on the move?..and the support system she has in place starts at home! No? Let’s not give the school and coach all the credit( yes Ossining and Ricci are good..but not the end all..and don’t go off and start your rhetoric that if we say something about Ossining we are haters/not a hater here)... #160 Comment By Hsbbfan On September 28, 2012 @ 6:23 pm

Chief is correct. She is not going anywhere at this point. You never know what parents will do, but at this point I have it from an impeachable source that they plan to keep her in O for complete exp.

To answer your other question, at this point Destiny. They are both gifted players but play very different gsmes. D gave O inside offense and very good D. A more of an outside shooter at this point. But a very talented one at that.

Destiny will be heard to replace. It was her team next year. I really hope it works out for her. She had a great environment here. Very stable .

Regarding the comments on support system it is true that many, myself included, are aware of the support that this particulary kid got or did not get at home and in school. You may not like it but it was no secret and some just want to see her have the best chance to succeed in basketball, academics and life. I dont see anything wrong that.

Wow, Books you should be so proud. A public school plays the rules and keeps bringing in transfers. Not the way public school basketball is suppose to be. Certainly, not what it is about. In fact, if I was an administrator, teacher or coach at Hamilton, I would be embarrased. Last year Hamilton plays the rules and brings in 2 or 3 girls. Doing it now again this year. I hope Section officials or New York State investigates Hamilton.

Since you know so much. Where was this girl before. Is she living in the school district now. Is it legite. Or am I wrong.

If it is Conn U, I hope she isn’t transferring out of the school in a year or two for lack of playing time. I like Ms. Chong and I like Gino and Conn U but I believe it is a risky proposition for anyone to go there as playing time is not a sure thing.

#185 Comment By hsbbfan On October 12, 2012 @ 9:50 pm

I agree but you’re not guaranteed playing time anywhere. UCONN has seen her play many times and I understand that they are really pursuing her. They are only bringing in two recruits next year if she accepts and are graduating 3 out of 11.
