we are as well!

Mike Zacchio and Phil Terrigno will be covering the girls hoops beat for The Journal News and LoHud.com this season.

About Mike Zacchio

While this will be my first season covering hoops for LoHud, it will not be my first go-around covering the sport. I covered the Purchase College men and women’s basketball teams during my tenure there and I was the sports editor of The Rambling Raider while attending North Rockland back in the day.

I am currently still in my second season of volleyball coverage for LoHud, and with four area teams in the state tournament this weekend, things are still as busy as ever.

To get a feel of my blogging work, please feel free to check out the LoHud Volleyball Blog [1], please just bare in mind that the site has only been back up since late October.

I am very active on Twitter, so for those of you who like to stay connected, you can follow me at @Zacchio_LoHud [2]

About Phil Terrigno

Hi folks – I’m glad to be covering girls hoops this season and i’ve spent the last few months covering Section 1 field hockey. My coverage of that wraps up this weekend as the Lakeland Hornets look to capture their fourth straight state title.

In terms of my experience  – I covered the Marist College women’s basketball team for several seasons and I broadcasted their games for one season as well. Over that time, I became familiar with many of the area’s high school and colleges coaches and i’m glad to get  back in the mix with this sport.

You can follow me on twitter @philterrigno  or email me at pterrigno@lohud.com

  • As soon as this weekend of state finals wraps up, it will mark the end of the fall season and we’ll be able to lay out a direct coverage plan for girls hoops. Thanks for reading!

Welcome aboard and glad to have you. There is a big following of Section 1 Girls Basketball and your readers expect information and articles. Last year was a joke. The preseason analysis consisted of minimal information and constituted only a half of page. in the paper. Every year prior last year, had two full pages of analysis and predicitions including break down of teams etc. You have readers. The paper has readers. We all hope this year’s coverage will be more comprehensive and complete. Otherwise you will lose readers and circulation since MSG Varisty is competation and providing real coverage. Good luck.

Sounds great -hope you guys enjoy some crazies as there are a few too many nutjobs and koolaid drinkers that post but I would say the majority are passionate fans who have the high school girls best interests at heart. Just don’t let certain powerfull coaches push you around and you guys will do fine! Good luck to all the girls that are putting in the hard work now and see you throughout the season.

To the Management of LoHud/Journal News:

Moderation is needed here badly and has been needed for years. For whatever reason, the usual reasons (desire to create a ‘controversial’ blog to drive page views for advertising revenue) the blogs and the main articles do not use the same comment format.

The result is real time posts, unmoderated posts, that can and do launch powerful defamatory attacks against adults and minors, none of whom are celebrities or other figures that do not receive protection form this form of speech.

The environment for these attacks is created by LoHud/Journal News, despite its boiler-plate disclaimers. This kind of thing usually doesn’t change until legal action is initiated, noting that LoHud/Journal News has already been involved in lawsuits emanating from posts at its online paper.

There is copious evidence of how the type of blog environment created by LoHud/Journal News has roiled communities, led to legal action, and in some cases has been pointed to as a contributing factor to suicide by targeted victims. The lowest common denominator hold the keys to the kingdom here at LoHud/Journal News and it is my hope that some new blood will finally step up and alter the trajectory that has been heading downhill for years here and can only end badly. And the paper will be culpable for creating and maintaining this environment based on case studies.

Moderation, is indeed, needed!! Considering this blog talks about young high school girls, comments should be screened. I have seen many defamatory and untrue comments on here, as well as vulgar comments and sexual innuendos. That is highly innappropriate. Along with screeningcomments, I feel that users should have to register and have a user name. Now, you simply have to provide an email per comment, many of which I assume are fake, and then you can enter any silly name imagineable. There are readers on here that make up a different name each time they comment. There are also readers that use others names purporting to be them. Reform please!

ANy one want to post up scrimmages – have the ones from NR,Suffern,TZ,Am they usually aren’t put up on the section 1 site so get the above lists from players, parents,or coaches

North Rockland is hosting 8-team scrimmage on Friday after Thanksgiving – Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, Woodlands, Peekskill, Alexander Hamilton, Mamaroneck, Monroe Woodbury, beginning at 8:45 am

Red Raiders visit Ossining on Saturday morning, host Truman (Bronx) on Monday, Nov 26 and visit White Plains on 11/28.

@NoRock…how do you think you will fare this year? In talking to most sources you seemed to have a stockpile of capable guards with varsity expierence( ie mularkey, burden, rivera) but lack any proven forwards – if calculations are right you probably lost 60% of your rebounds from last year( due to graduation)... Good luck in your season will be there Friday watching

@ Rockland – don’t forget Bertolino. Based on MaxPreps, Raiders have 3 seniors, rest freshman and sophomores. Will be interesting to see how they play it.

Didn’t forget..she missed 1/4 of the games last year and in at least 3 league games was a non factor..with teams keying on her the other 3 will prosper! Think it will be Rivera and Burdens team
