Just to give you an idea of how our coverage is going to move forward in the early stages of the season:
– On Thursday, Nov. 29, the Rockland and Westchester/Putnam preview editions will be available in the print edition of The Journal News and online. We’ll post all of that info here too, which will include a feature on a team from each county, an overview of the top teams, 10 players to watch and capsules about surprise teams.- The girls basketball notebook will run in the paper every Thursday throughout the season starting December 10th. It’s a nice change of pace from a game story and we can post observations and keep track of the team’s that are making improvements on a weekly basis. I’ve also made it a point in past notebooks to examine what teams are doing off the court – how do they team build, are they involved in charity events etc.
As you know, the season gets underway with a series of tournaments late next week and I’ll keep you posted on which one’s we will be covreing.
On a separate note, I spoke with a few of our area’s new coaches tonight.
Dennis Hurlie takes over in Rye as he formerly coached the Hastings’ boys squad and Yorktown girls team.
Gene Verdino is now coaching at Mahopac and the Somers resident spent many seasons coaching at Queen’s Molloy high.
Lance DeMarzo is the new Kennedy coach after spending time as the Mahopac varsity boys coach.
Michael Castaldo is in his first year as the Brewster coach. He previously coached the Yorktown freshman boys for one season and was a varsity assistant for three seasons.
In terms of player recruitment, there’s some news out of Woodlands. Coach Ty Postell confirmed earlier that two of his players are getting college looks and one is drawing attention from some serious college programs. (Texas, Louisville etc.) I exchanged emails with Postell tonight and as soon as I confirm more details I’ll share them here. This could fortify Woodlands as one of the stronger Class B teams.

10)couldn’t finish this one but bunch of girls could jump into#10 slot including Downey of Cl.South/burden of NR/Rivera of NR/Petrie of Cl.N/McMahon of Irvington/ceflaj of ?/sperling of nyack/Doherty of AM
Ok went back to notes from games I worked in aau over the spring/summer and my #10 should be Espinoza-hunter. All those girls listed as possible #10 would be honorable mention
I
Holla must be a rocklnd guy/gal
Yes I am but 7/10 were from Westchester…I follow rockland sports but have caught those westchester girls have seen in the county center and aau. Only 2,4,5 are Rockland girls…do you disagree with MY list( one of the great things about an interactive blog is you can state your opinion-as long as we maintain civility and don’t bash the girls..I’m sure we could get 10 people with 10 different lists)
My Rockland top 10 before I head out to work
1) M.Paehus AM
2) L.Castaldo Cl.S
3) K.McLaughlin Tz
4) M.Scoglomiglio Pr

Good job Holla. Here are my top ten players for 2012 -2013
1. chong
2. Lai
3. Martins
4. Paehus
5. Hood
6. Silfen
7. McLaughlin
8. Epinozza-Hunter
9. Petrie
10 Castaldo
All great players. Good luck girls.
Where is gordon and lawrence on these list. Both playing d1
Should have added birdy(gordon) to #10 or def hon mention( I know she’s d1 bound/and that’s good for her)but there’s a reason she slipped my memory. Don’t know who Lawrence is.
On another note a friend called me about my Rockland list and asked why I left Kelly Guarino of AM off my list/shes injured supposedly hurt the knee she tore a few years ago and is out. Would have put her on otherwise and would have her #2 PG behind missy scoglomiglio.
There is a lot of talent in Section 1 so you really need to split westchester and rockland into two lists which I think Lo Hud is attempting to do so i will give it a try for the westchester list.
Chong
Lai
Martins
Gordon
Hood
Silfen
Burden
Robinson
Espinoza-Hunter
Celaj
Rivera
If you’re making a westchester list both Rivera and burden are from North Rockland
List—Burden, Espinoza Hunter do not belong on that list. I can think of four guards off the top of my head that are much better
Jackie Brett (Greeley)
Imani Tilford (Woodlands)
Toni Pilla (Ardsley)
Tiffany Corselli (Hamilton)
Will be an interesting season for sure in Section 1 this year. You never know who will have a breakout season.
Well then put your big boy pants on…make a list of your top 10/ as Mr Holla said 10 people would have 10 different lists …only ones who would be repeats would be chong, lai, paehus, martins imo
anyone who would leave hood of their list has not seen her play
chong
lai
parehus
martins
hood
gordon
tilford
castaldo
silfen
pilla
The list has to start with girls that are going to play at the next level. Alyssa Lawrence has a full ride to San diego St D1. Gordon has a full ride to West Virginia they are ranked 14th in the country. Tilford has offers from several top 20 schools.
Who is ranked 14 th in the country…omg…stop drinking ok players but 14th in the country get a life your dreaming
West Virginia is ranked 14th in the country.

How did the multiple-team scrimmage go today? Any highlights?
Most of the teams were fairly well matched. New Rochelle and Mamaroneck are young and rebuilding. The others seemed to stay within 4-5 points of each other.
It looked like a first scrimmage for the girls. Hamilton moved the ball well; Peekskill seemed to have the best flow; N. Rockland relied on their guards; Mt. Vernon worked on getting their younger players into the offense. M Woodbury’s guards played well. Woodlands seemed like they are just getting to know one another.
Ok tonite review of some Rockland Coaches- tonite big division schools Tom am the small schools
1st place- Clarkstown South…Jen Chiera-Frank,and Becky miller do a great job! Manage the game well, prepare their girls and while they won Rocklands big schools last year will repeat this year and advance to the 2 nd or 3rd rd( possible county center) these 2 really are good for each other!castaldo is the big school MVP add in tenacious downs and reliable Allison haugh south will do well
2nd place-Clarkstown north
2nd place-north rockland…...tied
Cl.North-Kerry Sullivan former div 1 player at Marist. She can manage the game well and the kids like her, this year she just doesn’t seem to have the talent to go far but will probably tie w/NR will make an outer bracket or 1st rd game but won’t advance past that…the team will do as well as coach Sullivan can get get gabby jarred and E.Ryder to click
North Rockland-Kevin Metcalf…very passionate coach who loves the game/ the first 2 years thought he coached the game too much like a guys coach which he was( people girls/guys game is inheritenly different….guys usually have 8-12 players so you can sub often and many but most girls teams have 4-6 players so wholesale subs doesn’t work in the girls game and I think Coach Metcalf has adapted well – this yr think he can turn the edge, his team is lacking any forwards and between burden,Rivera, mullarkey has three solid guards..if he has a good run could make the second rd of playoffs
4th-Suffern,Billy Nolan…starts his 6th year on varsity and won’t advance past the 1st rd…limited talent will push his game calling( he has a forward heavy team…T Johnston a sophomore who is the anchor/ add in junior forwards Cohen and smith but is lacking guards to get them the ball) decent relationship w/ the girls but seems to wilt under game pressure/each year has had talent(Jefferson, baccas, wood, schmidt, califano) but after his second year blowing a 4(?) seed vs 17 in a playoff game seemed to be a afterthought…nice guy and from other coaches say good guy
5th -ERSD…spring valley and ramapo join forces to form east ramapo team no clue to coach/ coaches so at this pt can’t comment
I’ve been around the game for the last15 plus hrs…working with these coaches for the last 8
Years and wish all 5 teams and there coaches the best. It is a tough job
years..
Nice job deleting the previous post#22… no need for that this year
@Holla, The beauty of it for me was that, unlike in the past, nobody responded to the obviously disturbed blogger.
I hear ya! Maybe SOME of the crazies are growing up!
