There has been a small change in my coverage plans for Friday afternoon. Originally I was slated to cover Briarcliff at Eastchester in the Eastchester tournament, but I will now be covering the Albertus Magnus tournament.
The Falcons will host Maria Regina at 4:30 p.m. in the first of two games on the day. Phil’s plans to cover the Irvington tournament tomorrow and on Saturday are still as scheduled.
Tomorrow is also the big day that the season previews for the basketball season are published. The Rockland preview will spotlight the Falcons, a small school that is projected to have a big season. The Westchester/Putnam preview will spotlight Ossining, a Class AA powerhouse that has put together a gauntlet of a schedule to put its talent to the test.
It’s also worth mentioning that we will be periodically posting other team previews here so you can get a better idea of who else is out there, especially those not mentioned in tomorrow’s previews.
We will post tomorrow’s previews here as well so you can always check back to read them. We have started to receive some scores, so if you want to be ahead of the game, please follow me and Phil on Twitter for scores, and any additional tidbits about the game!

I’m sure this will cause a stir but I promise its not my intent. Myself and fellow Oss fans are excoriated on this blog for talking about our team. Yet, when we are not on here te blog is dead. Just look at the moderators last 6 posts. There is one comment. Common folks, talk about your teams or for every hold your peace. :0)
Good luck to all the teams, and bloggers, for another exciting season.
“Forever” hold your peace
I agree with hsbbfan, other then the folks from Rockand this blog is way to quiet when Ossining fans are not commenting. I am also looking forward to an exciting season for the Pride and can’t wait for the games to start. Good luck to all !
Look forward to Tom.s preview while I follow mainly Rockland teams..know about most of the westchester stars thru seeing them in Aau. I agree that the blog is way to quiet. I’ve only been on here for a few months and am surprised with the lack of posters.
Any of the Rockland County Seniors near the thousand point milestone.
Today’s article is a disappointment- where is the analysis? Review of team? Lineup?
I agree with “changes”, what was the preview? Very nice article on Ossining and deservidly so. It appears based on the “Preview” the entire league consists of 5 teams and 3 teams to watch. What kind of preview is that?
What a joke the Rockland preview is. It mentions one Rockland team and two players. It doesn’t even mention Laura Castaldo, Clarkstown South , who should player of the year in Rockland. A three paragraph article about an over rated Albertus team. LOL
Mike and Phil…first welcome aboard! Looking forward to your coverage of Section 1 girls hoops. Going into the season you guys should be aware of the high expectations for noteworthy coverage. The girls hoops game continues to grow and there is great talent and teams that is deserving of such coverage. As you can tell from the last few posts, we as followers are not shy about voicing our opinions on things. If there is one thing that will happen during your tenure as section 1 girls hoops reporters is you get better at your job…so long as you keep an open mind to recommendations/suggestions. Take a look at Josh Thomson’s Boys basketball preview http://varsityinsider.lohudblogs.com/2012/11/29/basketball-preview-2012-13-team-capsules/
Good Luck!!
That coverage was awefull. That was not even coverage. Just the same old, same old. I am going to cancel my subscription to the Lo Hud.
Mike & Phil, as a Section 1 Girls basketball fan, I find it extremely disheartening to read your “Preview” or lack there of. Did you talk to any coaches? As stated by NYBaller, Josh Thompson’s Boys Preview is just that, a team by team breakdown. Can we expect a more thorough “Preview” after you have taken a look at the Josh Thompson’s preview?
I concur w/ the above comments. Got up early went for coffee and a paper. Opened it up and was thourougly disappointed. Cover AM come on same old story(talented team/will go far but is the favorite!) Would have been better to cover pearl river trying to rebuild(or TZ) or imo Cl South would have been a better choice. With that besides Paehus of AM and McLaughlin of TZ no mention of any of the other Rockland stars(castaldo of cl south got totally robbed by you guys/petry of cl north, johnson of suffern, burden, rivera of NR,scogs of PR were slighted) you guys better step up to the plate and bring it! Follow Josh’s lead nhave some pride in the product!here’s hoping you guys head the fans advice(cancelled my sub to JN last year due to the lack of girls coverage and by this standard will not renew)
We will be posting similar team capsules today, just like Josh has on the Varsity Insider blog. The boys basketball articles in tomorrow’s paper will be reminiscent of our articles in format — feature on a team, teams to watch, players to watch.
Instead of the girls game getting equal or even slighty less than the boys coverage( which wouldn’t be right but better than this)... We get this pathetic and lame coverage…please JN correct your stance and give us a reporter who shows the same passion and effort as Josh Thompson..we and The Girls deserve that!
The Rockland coverage was disheartening for sure…I bet all of the local high school teams have players worth mentioning but it means talking with ALL the coaches. How about some depth in your information gathering….hmruph…...
Thank you for the warm welcome NYBaller, both Phil and I are very open to suggestions and/or recommendations, like you said, it’s the only way the coverage will get better — you fans telling us what you want. All I ask is that you please bare with us. Both Phil and I are very passionate, dedicated reporters, but we have only been on the beat for two weeks. Josh does an exceptional job, but he has also been on the same sport for several years, so it helps having a leg up. I promise that the coverage will grow more towards your expectations as the season goes on.
Your welcome Gents…we’re aware you guys just started. I just wanted to toss out an assist by giving you guys a heads up on the high expectations of covering girls hoops! Based on your last couple of previews posted you’ve scored some points. Keep up the good work!
