NYSSWA girls hoops rankings – How is Beacon ranked over Pearl River – How is Beacon even ranked? Just asking.
It only matters at the end of the season!
From what some area coaches have told me, Beacon is a strong squad. They have good height and length and have returned most of their starters from last year. It’s tough to get a feel for teams like Beacon, Lourdes, JJEF because they don’t often play down here until the playoffs – they’re practically in Section 9’s territory. I could see Pearl River jumping the A standings big time if they continue to win.
what
happened
to
Haldane????13pts???/
MIGHT BE THAT BAD KARMA FROM BEATING PAWLING 80-20
Haldane got what they deserved after pressing up by 30 against Pawling, as well as keeping its starters in until 4 mins remaining. Apparently their pressure didn’t work too well against Kennedy! Lol
what goes around comes around
sophomores rock and Phil,
Beacon is a very good team. They have a team that has largely been together for the past three seasons, and from the program at the Dutchess County Christmas Tournament they still do not have a senior on their team. I have seen them twice over the year, and my daughter played CYO growing up with a bunch of their players. They are not the tallest team ever but they are extremely athletic. Their freshman point guard Ecki (sp?) is super talented and as athletic a kid not named Chong as their is in the section. They have another wing Hughes who is tall and rangy but can shoot the three, and go to the basket. They have another kid Dennin who can really shoot it, and distributes really well from the wing. My daughter played with her growing up and misses playing with her now. She is a great passer. Watching this team though they change the game defensively and play very fast. They are a fun team to watch.
John Jay and Lourdes should not be too hard to get a read on. They are both exactly the same teams that they were last year. They are probably the second and third best team in AA (just like they were last year), but we all know that is a battle for second place. Ferrari and Decker can really play for Lourdes. Their only real weakness is size. They have only one post player of any significance, and they are not a very deep team.
John Jay is very deep, and the Balfour girl can really play. They have 7 girls capable of scoring in double figures, their biggest weakness has been handling pressure defense.
Clearly Ossining and Irvington are the class of our section, and there is no knocking that. Those girls are super committed and a lot of fun to watch. However, Dutchess basketball is really growing, and the idea that they are the little step-sister of section 1 basketball is coming to an end. A lot of their teams can compete. Like I said I am sure that Jay and Lourdes can’t compete with Ossining (but who really can), but they can compete with anyone else. I really think Beacon can play with anyone in Class A. Not to mention I wrote this whole post not mentioning Arlington, who while being very senior laden, and missing one of their best players, can really play too. Those girls have to do it at the sectional level though.
All great points. I spent some time working at the Poughkeepsie Journal so I’m familiar with these squads.
I guess the theme I keep hearing from area coaches is that since Arlington/Lourdes/JJEF don’t play their league schedule against teams from Westchester/Rockland, it isn’t always the easiest thing to gauge the actual level of play.
For instance, JJEF was ranked higher than Lourdes in the NYSSWA rankings for two straight weeks but Lourdes won when they played head to head yesterday.
At any rate, it will definitely make Section 1 Tournament play very interesting.
It is true but that is why the non-league schedules really have to be used to gauge the talent of the teams. It is all cyclical anyway, I remember a few years ago Beacon had a pretty good team for a few years and then went down for a while. I think where Dutchess basketball is catching up is that there coaches are starting to match the off-season mentalities of the better programs in the area. Lourdes is very committed in the off-season, as is John Jay. Beacon actually runs their own AAU program so those girls are playing together year round. The biggest difference that I have seen from my daughter’s freshman year to now, is the depth of good players in the county. It used to be each team had a star and maybe one or two other players, but now depth is substantially better. John Jay where my daughter goes can go 9 deep without much of a drop off. Other than Balfour and Gregory there next 7 kids are very similar in talent. Arlington lacks a true star (Rywalt is the closest thing) but they have 7 or 8 girls with the ability to score the basketball in bunches, and they defend. When I saw Beacon in the holiday tournament they were 9 deep and they just pressure you defensively and run the floor like crazy, but were better in the half court than I thought they would be. Lourdes doesn’t have the best depth (probably 7 or 8 deep), but their team plays the best together.
As I said earlier this is all cyclical, but for this year that league is every bit as good as the Rockland County League. They are all going to beat each other up, and I would not be surprised to see a team with 2 league losses win that league. But one of those four teams is going to finish fourth in that league, and they could all go to the county center. No other league can say that.
There was actually a nice article in the Poughkeepsie Journal about the league today
