In a strong showing, the Panthers topped Ursuline 59-55, holding SDSU-bound Alyssa Lawrence (pictured left) to 14 points. (including five in the first half)
Freshman forward Nicolina Chenard matched Lawrence with 14 points.
“There has been a (physicality) to Nicolina’s play ever since we played Woodlands and she has found another gear,” Ardsley coach Michael Pollio said. “She’s become much more comfortable with contact.”
Toni Pilla finished with 24 points and sophomore Casey Foley added 10.
“Toni made some great plays in the fourth quarter tonight,” Ardlsey coach Michael Pollio said. “She took the ball to the hoop hard on two occasions and got buckets for us.”
Ardsley downed an Ursuline squad that is fresh off of wins against Scarsdale, Mount Vernon and Carmel.
In the game’s only big momentum swing, Ardsley closed the second quarter on a 9-3 run and the half ended in a 24 point tie.
Grace Brennan added 10 points for Ursuline and Rianna Peduzzi had 8.
Ursuline has also played this entire year without the services of two starters, Veronique Ntumba and Keira Keane.
Ntumba tore her ACL before the season and Keane hasn’t recovered from a ligament injury that she suffered during soccer season.
“When I was out, it forced everyone to score,” Lawrence said. “Rather than just force it to me and have me score. Especially Anna (Savino) and Rianna (Peduzzi), they’ve really stepped up and once I came back in, we’re all flowing together.”
