ARMONK — Behind the strength of an outstanding offensive showing from Rachel Egan (shown below), Rye topped Byram Hills tonight 58-45.
Egan finished with 20 points and Alanna Morque added 17. Maddie Eck scored 13 points for the Garnets.
Byram Hills led 21-14 in the second quarter but squandered the lead. Rye outscored Byram Hills 20-9 in the third quarter.
“The third quarter is what killed us,” Byram Hills coach Mary Kate Burke said. “The other girls on (Rye) stepped up and they were left wide open when we were trying to switch off screens.”
Sophomore Raquel Gaudio finished with 14 points and teammate Kim Franco added eight points for the Bobcats, who were missing leading scorer Lucy Bancone due to a minor back injury.
“Rye played some really good defense,” Gaudio said. “They had a lot of good plays set that we just got caught up in. That slowed down our momentum and brought our confidence down.”
The Garnets displayed a nice variety of back-door cuts and designed plays to score interior baskets.
“I haven’t had a lot of those because I’m a shooter and I like to shoot,” Morque said. “Those were there because after I hit some shots and they were overplaying me and I was able to go to the basket.

Rye is 3-9 and Byram Hills is 3-10.
“We have a lot of newcomers and only one senior,” Egan said. “It shows our character of how we have improved throughout the year. We started off shaky but overall we matchup against well against Hamilton. In the first half, we were only down by about 2 points. We’ve had close contests but we haven’t been able to finish in the second half.”
