Wednesday’s schedule: Chong enters double-digits

Posted By Mike Zacchio On January 29, 2013 @ 10:03 pm In Basketball,Blogroll,Boys Basketball,Game Recaps,Girls baskeball,Links,Look ahead,Nightly Recaps,Notebook,Player Interviews,Poll,Power Rankings,Predictions,Rankings,Rockland County,Schedule,Sports,Team Previews | Comments Disabled

All of Wednesday’s matches will be taking place on this side of the bridge, as Rockland has no games scheduled. There’s a few good matches on the slate, but in terms of “interesting” games, the Rye at Ossining game should be a fun one.

Looking at Ossining’s schedule this year, you would think this game is a typo. The Pride (11-3) have more out-of-section wins than Rye (4-9) has overall wins. The obvious storyline as the season comes to a close is Saniya Chong’s chase for the all-time section scoring title.

Now 99 points shy of tying Karen O’Connor’s record of 2,662 career points, Chong could probably break the record tomorrow if coach Dan Ricci unleashed her for all 32 minutes, but we all know that’s not going to happen. (Although, it would be one heck of a story)

Chong will all-but-certainly play three quarters, if not less, so it’s really a matter of how much scoring she does in the time she’s allotted. My guess is that she’ll have about an average scoring day (30-35 points), but she’ll have a truckload of assists. Only time will tell.

Here is the complete list of slated games:

Wednesday, January 30

Rye at Ossining, 4:30 p.m.

Westlake at Byram Hills, 4:30 p.m.

Rye Neck at Valhalla, 4:30 p.m.

Panas at Peekskill, 4:30 p.m.

Croton-Harmon at Briarcliff, 4:30 p.m.

Holy Child at Green Farms Academy, 4:30 p.m.

Somers at Carmel, 6 p.m.

Kennedy at Haldane, 6 p.m.

North Salem at Pawling, 6:15 p.m.

John Jay at Brewster, 6:15 p.m.

Horace Greeley at Harrison, 6:15 p.m.

Hen Hud at Yorktown, 6:15 p.m.

Prediction recap:

Today’s record: 0-0
Season record: 201-67

I heard today that Saniya was named to WCBA All America team and will play at the Final Four venue down in New Orleans. Can anyone confirm?

#5 Comment By Aaaaa On January 30, 2013 @ 7:20 am

Quite rude what you said about rye…of course they do not expect to even come close to Ossining but no need to say that chong could score 90+ points against them

#6 Comment By hsbbfan On January 30, 2013 @ 7:20 am

My mistake. She is nominated, but not yet selected. Best of luck to her.

#7 Comment By Section1 On January 30, 2013 @ 9:47 am

Rye did not choose to play Ossining….it is the sections fault for putting them in the same league so you really should not be bashing a team like that.

#8 Comment By hsbbfan On January 30, 2013 @ 11:21 am

I don’t think he meant anything disparaging against Rye its just that after playing these powerhouse teams she prob could knock off a big chunk of that balance if kept in the game. But don’t worry, i doubt she will play too long. Prob still banged up from Vianney anyway.

#9 Comment By Not Right On January 30, 2013 @ 12:42 pm

She’s a great player and scorer, but there’s no need to bash any single team at this point. It’s like rubbing salt on a cut….......all very sad at this point. When and if they win states and federation, then you can talk the talk. Until then, enjoy!

Aaaa, he did not say anything rude about Rye, he said something true about saniya. Saniya could drop 90+ on any section one team, with the exception of irvington and hamilton, in a full 4 quarters playing time if she truly wished. She is unselfish though and gets 10 assists every game instead of adding 20 points to her scoresheet

#11 Comment By JUST A THOUGHT On January 30, 2013 @ 2:20 pm

I dont think he meant it to knock Rye,she could do that against most teams. But what makes her so good is that she has 10 assist a game. And if they could fiinish a little better she would have 15 or more a game.Thats why Gino went after her so hard,he knows how coulld she could be.

Anyone know anything about Sleepy Hollow? Who they’ve played? I see they spanked someone yesterday but it took a buzzer beater to tie Nyack and force OT. How good are they? I see there 14-1

#13 Comment By Inquiring Minds Want To Know On January 30, 2013 @ 2:49 pm

Just looked at MSG Varsity bracketology – Section AA has 22 teams listed. What is the playoff picture look like? It is a play in game for teams listed at 11 through 22 and then 1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, etc. Any information is appreciated.

#14 Comment By Records On January 30, 2013 @ 3:21 pm

I say let her go for it. go for the total record and go for the single game record. make it exciting. Its been kinda boring on here.

HS, Do some of Section One’s refs look better now that you’ve been to NJ?

#16 Comment By Colonial On January 30, 2013 @ 5:11 pm

54-21 Ossining at half. Everyone has gotten playing time for Oss. Most of the starters were out before the half, with the exception of Saniya.

#17 Comment By Colonial On January 30, 2013 @ 5:46 pm

84-37 final Ossining.

How many points did Saniya have today ?

#20 Comment By Mike Zacchio On January 30, 2013 @ 7:09 pm

Just got the game in — 29 pts, 8 ast, 7 reb in 3Q. Now 70 shy of tying the record.

#21 Comment By Colonial On January 30, 2013 @ 7:16 pm

That’s a pretty manageable number for her. Theoretically she could achieve that in 2 games.

#22 Comment By hsbbfan On January 30, 2013 @ 7:48 pm

Didn’t even come close to her avg against Rye? Excellent demonstration of class all around.

#23 Comment By gamewatcher On January 30, 2013 @ 8:51 pm

Nobody was knocking Rye they played as hard as they could. Truth is Niya could have gone for 60 no problem but that’s not her style. She didn’t have a particularly inspiring game today and it showed. She’ll be tested on Saturday against another top opponent. Regarding the officials comparison the answer is NO the section 1 officials would have fouled out both teams by the end of the first overtime. Good to see the bench get some extended time today…many of them have worked hard for 4 years and not had alot of time on the court. One in particular went down with an ACL last year and could have easily mailed in the rehab….not these kids Christine Kopera congrats to you on a job well done.

#24 Comment By Colonial On January 30, 2013 @ 10:54 pm

gamewatcher,

I agree with the bench. It was nice to see the starters on the bench supporting everyone out there and wanting to see some of these girls score their first varsity points of the season/their careers. Saniya didn’t have to be all that inspiring. She did rack up a bunch of assists though. I think she might have still been feeling the effects from over the weekend, I could be wrong though.

I’m actually watching that game vs. Vianney right now on MSG Varsity.

#25 Comment By StannerGrad. On January 31, 2013 @ 1:01 am

gamewatcher, If it was a brutal “hack fest” what would you suggest the officials do? Let ‘em continue to hack and risk injuries or keep calling fouls? It’s not an easy solution is it?

#26 Comment By hsbbfan On January 31, 2013 @ 8:14 am

Its funny. I asked a friend who was at the game yesterday how many pts Saniya had at The end and he said “not many”. 29 pts is a career game for most HS girls. I guess it didn’t feel like she was scoring much.

#27 Comment By Not Right On January 31, 2013 @ 10:31 am

When the game got out of hand and the lead was more than 25, was Chong in the game?
If so, that’s shameful and disgraceful …..throw in all the bench and let them play a bit.

#28 Comment By sophomores rock On January 31, 2013 @ 11:56 am

Rock-hoops,

Theres’ nothing special about Sleepy Hollow. I’m sure they’ve improved since playing CS. But they haven’t really been challenged..until Nyack. I think the first round in the play-offs is going to be a tough one for them.

#29 Comment By JUST A THOUGHT On January 31, 2013 @ 2:59 pm

Not Right
So they were leading by 25 after first period,so sheshould be on bench for 3 qrts.So she should have to sit 3/4 of the game because they were better team. They werre subbing freely the whole game. Why shouldnt she have a chance to break a record and try and score 3000 points.Especially this young lady. The mosst humble star ive seen in allot of years, looks to pass more than she shoots.Every kidplayed on that team and nothing wrong with trying to get her a record. No shame in how Coach Ricci played her.And im not even from Ossining just a fan who wanted to C her and her team play.

#30 Comment By hsbbfan On January 31, 2013 @ 3:25 pm

She scored well below what she averages against much tougher comp so whats the beef? She clearly didnt “pour it on ”.

#31 Comment By StannerGrad. On January 31, 2013 @ 5:20 pm

@Just A Thought, Very well stated. I completely agree.

#32 Comment By Colonial On January 31, 2013 @ 5:33 pm

Not Right,

Oss started the game on an 11-0 run. The bulk of the starters were pulled before halftime. Saniya did most of her work in the first half, the third quarter she didn’t even shoot all that much. She spent most of that passing the ball and setting up her bench players. The game was basically over by the end of the 1st.

One play Sanyia drove right to left and put up an unbelievable shot that went in. She is a joy to watch.
