Umm, there are 38 westchester girls basketball teams playing today. That means that BOCES has to go at least to the 38th deepest official on their list. With a lot of the girls officials doing boys games today, they will probably have to go a lot deeper than that, maybe even 60. The 60th official is probably a JV official who has never done a sectional game and probably not even a varsity game. Good luck coaches. Why couldn’t A schools play yesterday and then AA and B today making less need for officials each day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please tell us Jenn Simons?????
AA…Ossining by 50 over Mam
Lourdes by 40 over Cl North
Jjef by. 40 over ER
Ursuline over Fox Lane

Scarsdale by 2-4 over North Rock
Well stanner do you have any insight for us. You always have the refs back.
Wake up Simmons – give it a rest. Most of these games are going to be blow outs and ref’s will have no impact…
What would also solve the problem in the future is if the Rockland teams moved to Section 9

Tell you what why not take volunteers out of the stands to ref….I’d be willing to bet that they will do a better job than all 60 of them combined! HECK…i’d do it for free…and not rip off BOCES by mailing it in. Oh and by the way….WHY IS BOCES IN CHARGE OF OFFICIALS? OH AND WHO IN THE HELL IS JEN SIMONS?
Section One. Not always. In fact in this case I completely agree with Wake Up. If the girls need 40 to 60 officials on one day it is a recipe for trouble. What they usually do is assign the more experienced officials to the 8 vs 9 or 7 vs 10 games. My mother-in-law could do the Ossining game and get to Lourdes on time for CN vs Oll for a double header.
@ gamewatcher, Would love to see you become an official and work for free.
Pac girls are only down one 35 34 at half
Jen Simons is the person @ BOCES in charge of assigning the refs
Ossining over Mamaroneck 84-37 final score
North Rockland crushed by Scarsdale. Good job Metcalf.
Ossining wins big, several different scorers and everyone saw playing time (including the 7th/8th grader that was brought up from JV). Jalay Knowles went down in the 4th with an ankle injury. Appeared to be a minor sprain.
JJ over TZ in overtime.
I think it was by 1 or 2.
Neither team looked great—lots of turnovers for JJ in the first half. JJ played great defense on Kristen McLaughlin though. Tappan Zee also played great defensively. JJ didn’t seem to be able to figure out to best attack their press.
Rockland to section is every westchester Fan ’s dream. Nonsense. Rockland needs to remain section 1.
No added benefit whatsoever economically. The save money because of new tolls argument on the bridge is folly. There will be no added economic incentive to join section 9. Plus, you have to pay section 9 to get in.
Stupidity!
Rockland teams….
Suffern- didn’t make sections
East Ramapo- good job getting 14 seed build on that!
TZ..big surprise here not advancing. Upset
AM..tough OT win..will have to improve to advance further
Nanuet..nice win,as stated by others with sleepy hollow losing a better route
Cl.South..nice solid win ( pulling for you to get to the county center)
Cl.North..didn’t hear yet but don’t think they upset Lourdes,
Pearl River..top team in Rockland, see the gold ball within there grasp!
North Rockland.picked them to lose vs Scarsdale, but didn’t think they would get spanked by 20+
Nyack..didn’t qualify
Nyack qualified in an out bracket game
I believe that’s all teams from both Rockland leagues
Nyack and suffern both made play-offs. Suffern lost to north on wednesday, nyack lost as well. East Ramapo was actually down 5 late in 3rd qtr before running out of gas. TZ and NR’s problems are standing on the sideline
@ chief…play in games are games played to get into the sectional playoffs. Both suffern and nyack played these type of games( hence they didn’t make sectional playoffs) but if you want little Susie to feel better and be able to say we made sections go for it Mr./Mrs Chief
STANNER….I thought about it…..but realized I wouldn’t be able to be a fan. I would be glad to do a game for free…after all…it’s all about the kids right?
Amazed,
Rockland schools were originally part of Section 9 and had to pay Section 1 to play here too and the travel costs would be a lot less, bridge or no bridge.
couple of reasons why rockland should go to section 9… class A has too many teams… and no one should have to go to over the tappan zee on a friday for an afternoon playoff game
Watched NR vs Scarsdale one word tragic. NR coaching unbelievable. Desperate attempt by coach 2nd qtr 15 seconds and 25 pts behind coach has player make intentional foul. Why? Unexplicable. Not that it helped but nonetheless a tough loss for them. Good luck to Scarsdale. There’s always next year for NR right? Not unless they step up their ability to adjust or else it will just be the same ssdd.
COMMON SENSE:
The sectional playoff dates are published one year in advance because the state dates are published at that time, so WHY would anyone not have any common sense to see that a lack of qualified/experienced officials would be needed for both the boys and girls first round.
FYI: the second round is staggered.
Seems like there is enough blame to go around so lets review: Boces/Jenn Simmons works for Section 1 Public Schools (not the other way around) She is the AD for the section with many committees so she and Boces shares in the blame, then there is the Championship Committee that reviews and coordinates the sectionals they share in the blame, then there is the Chairperson for the Boys and Girls BB Sectionals they share in the blame, then there is the Presidents and Executive Boards for the Boys and Girls Officials Association they share in the blame. You have all these administrative boards and no one picked up on this? That is not acceptable. Don’t all these people communicate with each other? Why not?
According to Jenn, “An official ranked #38 is just as good as the #1 ranked official”, if that in fact is true then why do we have a rating system and rankings of officials Jenn? BOCES needs to rely on the professionals the Presidents and Executive Boards of the Boys and Girls Officials Association to provide insight as to who the best officials are. These would at least assist in a positive way to make sure tough games are officiated by qualified officials. Note, that the shortage of officials is caused by the following factors:
– some officials do both boys and girls games – some officials do privates and catholic league games – some officials are college officials – some officials go away for the winter break – some officials are ill or injured – Boces has a rule if you do not take a first round game you are no longer qualified for the remainder of the sectionals.
With that being stated all these variables limit the small pool of qualified officials to do the sectional playoffs, COMMON SENSE plan early and find a solution, how about staggering the game dates? HELLO MCFLY.
How could anyone justify using a modified official who does not have the experience on the varsity level to officiate their first varsity game in a sectional playoff? This recommendation was made by the Girl’s Basketball Officials President when asked how to handle the shortage on Friday. Are you kidding me?
It was suggested by a school AD and agreed to by Boces that they would use a varsity official from the Dutchess or Rockland board to maintain the integrity of the game, GREAT CALL and thanks!
The sooner Boces/Jenn Simmons realizes she works for the student-athletes, the coaches, the schools and community the better off she will be. High School sports is about the kids, so we are they not in the best interest of these decisions, its about their educational experience so some people who hold administrative positions on a Power Trip.
DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE???????
Best of luck to all the teams and schools in the remainder of the sectional playoffs and enjoy the experience!!!
It’s a gripe and a constant complaint about the officials assigned to any basketball game in our areas. It’s unfortunate how we don’t have enough good refs to cover any game. Whatever level of play. Players are called for insignificant fouls. Most of the time getting into foul trouble all at the calls of these refs. It’s frustrating and sad when players are punished because of these untrained people. And I don’t want to hear, it’s judgement, because most of the time it’s poor judgement. Or that it’s their side/extra job. Any job should be done well. If not find another. No game should ever begin with worrying about which 2 bad refs assigned to your game.
@BB insider, you absolutely nailed it. What a great response!
@3seasons, Get your stripes and improve the quality of the officiating. ( I can almost anticipate your reply but, really, what is your solution?)
@stannergrad – great comeback. Are you one of those refs? I would never. If anyone takes on that position it should be done at least 75% right. How about more training? Are you happy with them?
@ 3seasons, I am happy with the top 20 or so but, beyond that, I agree that there are weaknesses. The reason I am sometimes protective of the officials is that people who have never trained to officiate criticize those who go to camps, watch videos and do everything they can to improve their skills. If you have ever been an official you have a right to be hypercritical. If not, you also have the right to be critical but you need to understand that “walking in their (officials) shoes” is a significant requirement before you bash ALL refs as a group. For those of you that beg for improvement, get your stripes. And, once again, I am NOT a Section One official!
That’s fair, they’re are a FEW. But, videos and camps aren’t helping for most. Taking the player out of the game or worse taking the game away from the team has been the biggest shame. Not everyone should get their stripes (could not do it), but neither should MOST of these refs. In the end, the refs dictate the game, and you have to hope your team gets the right calls.
@3seasons – what????????????? “in the end, the refs dictate the game, and you have to hope your team gets the rights calls”. OMG what a crock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As stated the 38th rated ref is as good as number 1? I can,t support that thinking at all. It is true that the refs CAN and do dictate the results of GOOD MATCHUPS…when Irvington plays Ossining.all the good players get into foul trouble right away….or new ro vs. mt. Vernon…..same thing….if you watch msg varsity games you see it. Not nearly as many fouls in uncontested games.
Lets address the officiating topic: refs very rarely dictate the outcome of a game, the game result comes down to a missed shots, turnovers, missed free throws, timeout not called, substitution not made, on and on. If Boces and Jenn Simmons would finally realize that the Officiating Board President and Executive Boards of each association knows who are the strong and experienced officials and would listen to their recommendations on highly competitive games it would make for a much better officiated game. It may seem that the best players get in foul trouble early which I don’e believe but maybe in appears that they are the higher level athlete playing at a higher level and may create a more physical environment that requires a foul call.
Officials are supposed to officiate on advantage vs disadvantage situations, therefore a flow of the game needs to be established, good officials know ahead of time the matchups, coaches and teams strengths and weaknesses and discuss this prior to the game, during the game, at half time and at the end of the game. They know who has more athletic ability and who is the more physical team, who has a deep bench, etc.
The boys officials are rated by the coaches which dictates their rank as well as the movement in the designated varsity, jv and modified groups. The girls officials are rated by the coaches and their partner they work with on that game. The two ratings are combined and calculated and the rank is then determined. In addition, officials wanting to move up must pass a written test similar to the NCAA test. Remember though, book smart is only one small aspect of officiating, floor presence, experience and game management skills are the keys to excellent officials.
The presidents and executive board of each association know who are good officials and not so good. This is their profession they know the qualities and elements of being a good official, I do not think BOCES knows a good official or bad official just by their name as well as their level of officiating.
I do know that the girls board runs training classes for their members for both 2 man and 3 man mechanics and believe the boys do as well. In addition, they have in the past hired experienced college officials to train and rate the officials that attend those training camps. Unfortunately, you will always have those officials that are dedicated and want to be the best, attend camps and clinics to continue to learn, while you have others that are in it for the money and will do 6 kiddie games for the cash. The officials need to be identified who are the real professionals and rewarded by getting the highly competitive games as well as the sectionals to make it a professional experience for all. Who cares if these refs get a game a day as long as we all know the real refs are on the game for the real reason. We have ratings in everything we do, and #1 is #1 for a reason and so forth down the line. Maybe the officials associations should consider using independent rating pros to come in assist in the rating and ranking of officials, so the good ole boys clubs prevents any issues.
So next time you blame a call on a ref, yes they make quick split second decisions and may kick one or two calls a game which is human, watch the college and pro officials, they all do its the nature of the game, but for the most part they never affect the outcome of a game, get over it and maybe that missed layup or turnover in the 2nd quarter cost the game.
BB insider, BRAVO!
So glad you’re in agreement with the need for better refs. Bravo.
No one Snubbed Saniya.. Her coach didnt play a National schedule until her senior year, never played a National schedule with AAU, never went to Nike skills camps, and she scored 2700(albeit a great fete) mostly against no one… I mean if people can get out of Westchester thinking they will see she is playing in the right Allstar game and congrats to her… McDonald All Americans r the cream of the crop.. If she cant get in with Geno influence, then she didnt do enough…
