NEW ROCHELLE — New Rochelle jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 72-30 win against Woodlands.
The Huguenots took a 23-5 lead in the first quarter. Coach Bruce Daniele was pleased not only with their fast start, but with the fact they were able to sustain their play throughout the entire game.
In New Rochelle’s first two wins of the season at the Carmel tournament, the Huguenots allowed their opponents to get back into the game late.
“We played a full game,” Daniele said. “We didn’t want it to be close in the end.”
Asjha White-Silas led New Rochelle with 19 points. Teammate Amirror Dixon chipped in with 11. Daniele said he’s happy to have Dixon, who missed the beginning of last season due to a knee injury, ready to go at the start of the season.
“She really makes us go,” Daniele said. “She’s playing a lot better. She’s playing within herself.”
Daniele was also proud of his defense for holding Woodlands’ Georgia Tech-bound senior, Imani Tilford, to only 13 points.
With so much talent returning from last season’steam that reached the Class AA sectional semifinals, Daniele believes the Huguenots have the potential to make another deep playoff run.
“I think they realize they could be pretty good this year,” Daniele said.
