Since it’s a slow — rather non-existent — coverage day, here’s a look at the coverage plans for next week.
After keeping my eyes on it since the team’s schedule was released, I’m been given the approval to cover No. 1 UConn vs. No. 21 Cal at Madison Square Garden in the Maggie Dixon Classic next Sunday. For those of you that don’t know, not only is this a matchup between two Final Four teams from last year (they didn’t play each other), but it also features locals on both teams.
Section 1 scoring champ and New York Gatorade Player of the Year Saniya Chong (Ossining) will hit the court for the top-seeded Huskies, looking to continue her stellar rookie season for the reigning national champions. Coaching against her will be Scarsdale alum Lindsay Gottlieb, who led the Golden Bears to their first Final Four appearance in tournament history last year.
Yes, we are predominately in the high school sports business, but this was a matchup that couldn’t be missed — especially being in New York, at The Garden, no less.
I will be writing a feature on Gottlieb, which will run on Sunday, and then focus the game story around Chong for Monday’s paper. Stay tuned for both, but in the meantime, see where else we will be this week:
