Give the Blind Brook girls basketball team some credit. Down by 16 to host Byram Hills after one quarter, 18 at the half and six at the end of three quarters , the Trojans tied the game with one second left in regulation on Olivia Brettschneider’s bank shot from inside the paint.
But Byram Hills prevailed, 62-60, in overtime Monday to improve to 3-1.
Lucy Bancone led the Bobcats with 19 points. Ashley Polera hit for 14 (four in OT), and Katie Ryan had nine. Brettschneider finished with 19.
Byram Hills led throughout overtime and was up by five with seven seconds left when the Trojans’ Emily Sachs hit a 3-pointer for her only points of the game.
But the Bobcats, who were able to break Blind Brook’s full-court, 1-3-1 press throughout most of the game, were then able to run out the clock.
“We didn’t let their press totally rock us. We used our speed to get downcourt,” Byram Hills coach Mary Kate Burke said, noting her squad had problems with the press during its loss to Pearl River.
Burke was also pleased with Ryan’s play, calling her a “huge difference” in the game.
Ryan, a 5-foot-9 forward, pulled down 11 rebounds, played strong defense and was able to score by posting up inside, which brought a new look to the guard-centric Bobcats.
“I have to laugh. She’s our tallest player,” said Burke, a 5-9 guard during her Bobcats playing days.
