Somers coach Kristi Dini still recalls the bitterness of beating Peekskill in the regular season last year and losing to Albertus Magnus in an overtime battle in the Section 1 Class A tournament, only to watch those two meet in the championship.
The Tuskers seem to have little care or fear that Peekskill returned every player from its section-championship roster, downing the Red Devils 62-54 at home on Wednesday.
“Preparation for each game is always the same: I like to scout, see the strengths and weaknesses, see what we can take advantage of,” said Dini, who is in her second year at the helm. “We played them in a zone last year. … Our man-to-man (this year) was good (against Peekskill).”
The Red Devils (1-1) had been ranked No. 8 in the state for Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association in the first installment of weekly rankings released on Tuesday.
Dini said that her bigs, Kayleah McGuire and Caite Opfer, were a major factor on Wednesday, but ultimately attributed the win to excellent ball movement and balanced scoring.
“Normally, I can sit and point out one or two players that really stand out, but they really played good team basketball today,” she said. “Everyone was doing their job and contributing on both sides of the floor.”
McGuire (17 points) and Opfer (12 points) were two of four double-digit scorers for the Tuskers, who were 0-2 to start the season. Nicole DeMase scored 16 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to open the game, and Gabby Rosenzweig had 11 points.
“This was huge,” Dini said. “We needed this for Somers basketball.”
Best of the rest: Kyle Lefkowitz had 12 points, 24 rebounds and 11 blocks as Harrison handed Briarcliff its first loss of the season, 53-44. … Miranda Santiago hit for 19 points to lead Yonkers to a 53-28 win over Lincoln in the Yonkers tournament. … Grace Carr had 22 points to lead Sleepy Hollow over Bronxville 67-38. … Chloe Mullarkey had 18 points and Ciera Rivera 16 points as North Rockland topped host Nanuet 62-47.
