Apologies for the late post; I’ve felt like death since yesterday morning. The New York Sportswriters Association released its updated rankings for girls basketball on Tuesday, and two local teams saw significant improvement.
Clarkstown South, still undefeated at 8-0, jumped six spots to 14th overall in Class AA. The Vikings are thriving under first-year coach Brian Metcalf, and should be the favorites to try and dethrone Ossining for the section title. Laura Castaldo has carried over her junior-year success into the senior year and has been the anchor of the Vikings program.
As expected, Peekskill was back in the rankings after dropping out last week, but the leap was quite an eye-opener. The Red Devils came in at No. 19 after winning the Slam Dunk Tournament last week, notching impressive victories over New Rochelle and Albertus Magnus.
Here are the rest of the local teams who were also ranked:
No. 8 Ossining
No. 14 Clarkstown South
No. 19 Lourdes
No. 15 Beacon
No. 19 Peekskill
No. 24 Albertus Magnus
No. 1 Irvington
No. 20 Keio
