After beating Lourdes for the first time in the program’s history, it was expected that Beacon would get some love in the rankings — both my own and the state rankings by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Sure enough, it did.
I bumped Beacon from No. 7 to No. 5 overall, and even considered it for the No. 3 or 4 spot in Section 1 (for all classes). The NYSSWA gave the Bulldogs a leap over reigning Class A section champs Peekskill in the Class A state rankings, putting them at No. 14 — one spot ahead of Peekskill. Albertus Magnus was the only other ranked Class A team at No. 20. Somers, which nearly upset the top-ranked team in the class, Wallkill, remained out of the top 25.
The rest of the rankings were pretty much straightforward — Ossining, Clarkstown South and Lourdes remained the Class AA ranked teams, Irvington stayed at No. 1 as the only Class B team and Keio stayed in the Class C ranks.
Seeing as how wild the Class A section bracket is going to be, I want to give you all the heads up right now that I will definitely be doing a March Madness-style bracket contest. I’m thinking two tickets to championship week for whoever has the best bracket (entering the Count Center, obviously) with tiebreakers as a backup plan.
I was thinking of doing a larger contest, involving all four brackets with a similar and/or larger prize. (I figured Class A will make-or-break 99 percent of brackets, anyway.) When the brackets are released, I’ll ask anyone interested in participating to e-mail me their completed brackets for all four classes. I’ll post an updated standings list each night so you know where you stand, and if I can figure out how to make them PDF files, I will post and/or link everyone’s bracket (once the tournament starts) so you can see who picked what and track the action yourselves. What do you think? (Please vote below.)
