Here’s Nancy Haggerty’s game story from Westlake’s overtime win over Maria Regina, along with the rest of the results we received tonight:
The visiting Westlake girls basketball team did just that Saturday, saving their last three 3s for overtime as it pulled away from resurgent Maria Regina, winning 67-58.
Westlake led throughout the game — that is until Tiger senior forward Damonae Hargrove (pictured right), who had 21 points, scored off her own miss, then followed with another inside basket to tie things at 53-53 with just under a minute left in the fourth quarter.
That’s how the game stood heading to OT but the Wildcats then went on a no-looking-back tear.
First Faith Lovett (11 points) buried a 3 from the corner. Then, after a Maria Regina throw-away, Sam Kane (five points) connected from the same zip code. Then it was Katie Cullen’s (four 3s and 17 points) turn. The 9-0 run essentially sealed the game for the 8-2 Wildcats (8-2).
“The three 3-pointers were huge,” Westlake coach Sean Mayer said… “We had a lot of good shooting today and it helped us. … We needed to shoot the ball well to beat this team.”
The hottest Wildcat hand belonged to Lauren Holzer, who buried five 3s on her way to 21 points.
“I love games like this,” the sophomore (pictured left) said. “I love like the thrill of especially overtime.”
Westlake led 33-26 at the half and, after Maria Regina pulled to within three on a Hargrove basket and two Hargrove foul shots, it regained the seven-point cushion with 6:17 left in the third quarter on consecutive Holzer 3s.
But the Wildcats couldn’t shake the Tigers.
A couple of minutes later, Tiger Gaby Castillo, who finished with 17 points, grabbed the rebound off her own miss and converted it. Seconds later, she stole the ball and scored to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 39-36.
But ultimately, the Tigers (9-8) had no answer for Westlake’s outside game.
“Their shooting was unbelievable. … They hit tough shots,” Tigers coach Mike Kiers said. “We were hitting 2s. They were hitting 3’s.”
Best of the rest: Emily Bohl scored 16 points for Dobbs Ferry in a 47-40 win over Pelham. … Tara Berger had 22 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks for Rye Country Day in a 57-27 win over Hopkins. … Kelly Guarino scored 16 points for Albertus Magnus in a 77-49 loss to Georgetown Visitation in Washington, D.C. … Leah Greene had 10 points and eight rebounds for Kennedy and was named all-tournament team in a 46-38 win over Catholic Central. … Gabby Rosenzweig scored 18 points for Somers in a 61-44 win over Mount Vernon. … Lauren Sackett scored 16 points for Yorktown in a 44-35 win over Nanuet.
