After weeks of waiting, I’m finally going to see Keio in action today when the Unicorns host Nanuet in a crossover game at 4:30 p.m. Follow @LoHudGirlsHoops for in-game updates and @Zacchio_LoHud for other scores from around the section.
Keio, which was ranked by the New York State Sportswriters Association all season, was bumped out of the Class C ranks on Tuesday after dropping games to Port Chester and Rye Neck during the previous week. I haven’t seen Nanuet since the season-opener against Clarkstown South, but from what I saw then, to what I’m hearing now, the Golden Knights could make some noise in the Class A bracket. (Because it wasn’t enough of a mess before.)
The Unicorns, led by senior captain Sae Toyomura, had a very rough week last week and could really boost its confidence, and possible state rank with a win over Nanuet. The Golden Knights, led by Alexa Amalbert, have gained the attention and respect of rival schools, despite its 5-8 record.
I’m really interested to see how the Hen Hud-Mahopac game pans out. The Sailors (10-4) are coming off a nice upset win over reigning Class A section champs Peekskill (9-4), and Mahopac (9-3) has been heating up as the section tournament nears. These are two of my bubble teams, and with North Rockland’s loss to Suffern on Monday, one of these teams could very well make its way in with a win on Thursday.
I’m also interested to see what happens with Scarsdale-Ursuline. Another game that features two teams on the bubble (Ursuline is my next team in), the Koalas will likely take the No. 10 spot in my rankings on Sunday with a win over the Raiders. From what I saw of Scarsdale on Monday, it moves the ball exceptionally well and can put rallies together with it’s 3-point shooting (if its shot is on, that is). The Raiders struggled against a bigger Mount Vernon team, and were manhandled on the boards. While Ursuline has a strong defense, as well, its height is more on Scarsdale’s level, so the Raiders should have a chance to knock off the Koalas, who have not lost in 2014.
All in all, it should be a great day of basketball. Send me or post any updates if you’re at a game and I’ll be sure to spread the word. Check out the complete schedule below, along with my predictions:
