Today we end not just the school and work weeks, but the month of January. And what a wild month it has been.
Several have used the new year as a new beginning and have sparked incredible second halves to put themselves in terrific position for the upcoming section tournament. Now that most schools ended their exams, the schedule is packed to the gills after days of scattered games.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Legendary Irvington coach Gina Maher will go for her 600th career win today when the Bulldogs host Rye Neck. Maher, who has led Irvington to four consecutive Class B state titles, will become the first Section 1 coach — male or female, in boys or girls hoops — to reach the 600-win plateau. (Editor’s note: I originally thought she would go for No. 600 on Feb. 3; this may be a re-scheduled game. With all the snow and cancellations we’ve had, it’s tough to keep track of everything.)
— Tappan Zee senior Kristen McLaughlin is 24 points shy of 1,000 for her career. The Dutchies travel to Nyack today at 4:30 p.m. McLaughlin has helped spearhead a Tappan Zee team that has caught fire in 2014, posting an undefeated record in the new year.
— Edgemont senior Shayna Davner is 27 points shy of 1,000 for her career. The Panthers host Pelham tonight at 7 p.m. for their “Senior Night.” Reaching the milestone at home and on Senior Night will certainly be an added perk for Davner, but doing it against a stingy Pelican defense won’t be easy.
— Woodlands will be hosting its second annual NYC vs. Westchester Showcase, which will feature two local teams — Peekskill and, of course, Woodlands. The event is in support of Coaches vs. Cancer, so if you’re in the area, stop by to watch some great basketball for a great cause.
— Falcons senior and McDonald’s All-American nominee Imani Tilford is 26 points shy of the program record, which was set by 2009 grad Porsha Postell.
