The Kennedy girls basketball team got off to a slow start at Aquinas High School on Monday, but by the time halftime rolled around, the Gaels had created some breathing room on their way to a 61-32 win.
“It was 6-5 after one quarter,” Kennedy coach Lance DeMarzo said. “We turned the ball over and missed eight layups. In the second quarter, they came together by putting up 28 points and we held Aquinas to five.”
Kennedy held a 34-10 lead at the half and was able to rest most of its starters in the second half. Kiera Hennessy led the way, pouring in 18 points and grabbing six rebounds.
Megan Wiedenhamer added 11 points and six rebounds, while Kaitlyn Knox and Tara Heslin-Scott scored eight points apiece. All 11 players for the Gaels got into the game and scored.
Kennedy is now 13-10 overall, but 8-1 in its Westchester/Bronx CHSAA league and will host Maria Regina at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
“If we win tomorrow against Maria Regina, we’ll definitely lock it up,” DeMarzo said of the league title.
