Man, was this close. Or should I say, ‘wo’man that was close?
This year’s inaugural Zacketology contest came down to a tiebreaker between the only two women in the field — and they pretty much blew away all of us men. These two ladies had the same number of correct picks and the same number of total points, so it came down to possible points.
Obviously the tournament is not over yet, but since I wanted to award Championship Week tickets (and since the majority of you voted for them on the poll to your right), the contest (for tickets) ends after quarterfinals. I will award any other possible prizes we get (anything else listed in the poll) after the tournament, when we have a true winner.
As I said in my original post, the winner is getting at least two tickets, even if I pay for them out of my own pocket. If I can get four for free, she will receive four tickets.
Without further adieu, let’s congratulate our winner… Cathie Skopetos!
Cathie edged Cheryl Brooks for this year’s crown, but both brackets were sensational. Both picked 43 of the 48 games played so far correctly. Both were near-perfect in first-round games, going 22-for-23. Both also picked 11 of the 13 County Center teams (three Class C teams were automatically in). The difference maker was the Class AA bracket. Cheryl unfortunately had Ursuline defeating Lourdes in the championship, and both were eliminated on Thursday. Cathie has Ossining over Clarkstown South, two teams still alive, giving her more possible points and the win. That math works out to 196 total points, with a possible score of 392 (the max was 408).
Here are the complete standings:
1. Cathie Skopetos: 196 points (392 possible points)
2. Cheryl Brooks: 196 points (343 possible points)
3. Mike Zacchio: 176 points (360 possible points)
4. AA Fan: 174 points (358 possible points)
5. StannerGrad: 176 points (335 possible points)
6. FanOfTheGame: 172 points (331 possible points)
7. Joe D.: 166 points (313 possible points)
Cathie, if you’re reading this, congratulations! I will be sending you an e-mail shortly. The rest of you, sit tight. The tournament is not over, so the true winner can easily change by next week. Yes, Cathie will win one of the other prizes if she is the overall winner as well.
As for the separate Class A-only contest, here are the standings. The winner will be awarded after the finals. Yes, Cathie can also win this and sweep all three possible prizes. Even though we had eight entries for this, it is already a four-person face, as half of the field has already been mathematically eliminated from winning. At least I have a shot of winning something…
