WHITE PLAINS — Sometimes seedings don’t lie.
Yes, the Hamilton girls basketball team had eliminated Haldane two years ago in the Class C semifinals and again last year in the finals.
But Tuesday, the only thing Hamilton won against Haldane in their Section 1 semifinal game at the County Center was the opening tip.
No. 1 Haldane romped over the No. 5-seeded Red Raiders 61-35 in a game that often wasn’t as close as that.
Haldane will play No. 2 Keio at 7 p.m. Friday at the County Center for the section championship.
If it plays half the game it did Tuesday it will likely be regional-bound.
Sitting large chunks of the game, junior Allie Monteleone led all scorers with 20 points and drew ultimate praise from Hamilton coach Ben Carter.
“She’s really intense,” he said. “She’s a thoroughbred. You’ve got to love and appreciate it.”
Behind Monteleone’s 10 first-quarter points, the Blue Devils pulled out to a 19-2 first-quarter lead.
At the half, they led 31-11.
Still, Haldane never stopped diving for loose balls.
“We wanted it so badly,” Monteleone said. “We wanted to keep it going. We played like it was tied the whole time.”
Senior guard Sam Lisikatos, who had 12 points, seemed to embody Haldane’s approach, flying off the court for a loose ball with her team up by 26 points in the third quarter.
“We had to show we were here to play and not to quit,” Lisikatos said (video below).
Cali Schweikhart had 10 points for Haldane, a couple of buckets coming off pretty feeds from Monteleone.
Kadidia Edwards led Hamilton with eight points and Madison Hood had six, both coming on 3s. The first was a third-quarter buzzer-beater, but that only cut Haldane’s lead to 54-20.
“I want to say it’s our immaturity,” said Carter, who lost six seniors from last year’s section championship team.
Of Haldane, he added, “They know about competing — all about having to fight to the end.”
